We knew that our rescued dog had major dental issues when we adopted him. We could see that he was missing a lot of teeth, and some that were there were blackened or worn down or both. Our vet lacks the special x-ray machine needed to evaluate the entire mouth and jaw for problem areas, so we elected to take our dog to pet dental specialist, Dr. Gingerich. His personable staff was ready for us when we arrived at our dog's appointment and immediately escorted us to an examination room. There our dog's vitals were checked by the anesthetist, who also explained what our dog's stay would be like for him and what to expect if our dog's dental problems were minor and what to expect if they weren't. Then Dr. G. arrived to exam our dog again and to answer any questions the anesthetist hadn't. Soon after, we left our dog in the capable hands of the staff and waited for Dr. G to x-ray our dog's jaws and call us with the results. When he did, we authorized him to complete all the dental work our dog needed, as well as the thorough dental cleaning that had been planned. Dr. G called us again after he'd completed all his dental work to reassure us that our dog was doing fine post-op and to tell us when he'd be ready to go home. When we returned, Denise Rollings (Dr. G's veterinary technician specialist) brought our dog to us, reviewed his x-rays with us as well as how to pull them up online on our home computer, explained his post-op care, gave us 3 meds to give him - one for just pain, another for pain and inflammation, and a third, an antibiotic - and sheets of information to take home covering everything from the results of Dr. G's oral examination findings and from the x-rays when our dog was anesthetized, his diagnosis, the dental and jaw work he did to correct problems, the results of our dog's blood work, detailed written post-op instructions and more. As we left, Denise gave us her card with her number on it to call if we had further questions or problems arose. The day after our dog's dental work, Dr. Gingerich himself called to ask how our dog was doing and to answer any questions we might still have. At our follow-up visit on Jan. 6, in addition to confirming that our dog's mouth had healed so that he could resume normal eating, both Dr. G and his tech showed us how to provide daily care for our dog's teeth and advised us on safe and effective treats and other chewables.
We know that it cost us more than we'd like to have spent on putting our dog's mouth right, but we felt the cost totally justified by the top-notch work Dr. Gingerich did in our dog's mouth. We couldn't commend him and his staff more for their warmth, professionalism, and gentle, loving care for a dog that had had to have dental surgery.
