With respect to the scissors, he simply sharpened two pairs of old scissors. These days you can buy a new pair for about the same price as getting an old pair sharpened. In my case, I had two pair of old scissors that I wanted to keep and use. He sharpened, cleaned, and oiled them like new for $9/pair.
In past he has overhauled our Singer sewing machine and fixed our Hoover vacuum cleaner. In each case, his price was reasonable and the repairs reliable.
