This happened at the home where I live with a friend. At first, Mr. Cook seemed very friendly and charming. He promised to remove old sod and install new zoysia sod. He also agreed to do additional yard work, which included edging and weeding around several beds in a 1.3 acre lot. For three weeks in a row after spraying old sod, he promised to return on a certain day to install the sod, but would never show up. He never called to say he wouldn't be there or what was going on. It took several voice messages each time to get him to call. After being put off so many times, I questioned him about whether he was telling the truth. He became furious and yelled that I was "calling him a f*****g liar" and hung up on me. We spoke again later and agreed we would continue and I was assured by him that I would get the sod installed soon. A couple of weeks went by and the sod, and the installers that worked for Mr. Cook, showed up. They wanted to be paid in advance and refused to do the job if not paid in advance. I refused, but told them I would give them the check after I inspected the completed work. Mr. Cook, who was communicating by phone and didn't show up in person, told his workers to leave and not to do the work. I had to take him to small claims court. He showed up with a lawyer and refused to return the money. I dropped the case since I didn't feel it was worth the time or money to get a lawyer and fight it.
