"We apologize for the delay in responding to the customer's concerns. We were unaware of this report until recently. The customer has two systems and have been customers since 2006. On the first maintenance visit it was brought to their attention that there was biological growth in both the duct system and the air handlers and recommended duct cleaning. The maintenance visit in 2008 again reported heavy biological growth in the duct system and air handlers. One of the accumulators was reported leaking. In 2010 the work order again brings to attention the suction accumulators leaking/corroded and the biological growth issue. United has always kept our customers' interests first and foremost. We therefore do our best to keep our customers informed as to the condition of their unit(s) and at what point replacing a system becomes a better value than putting money into an older system. We also understand customers, for whatever reason, preferring to put off replacement, so we try to inform the customer of both options. As such we advised our customer of the costs to “refurbish” their systems by replacing some leaking and poorly performing parts, which would in turn increase the efficiency of the systems and result in lower electric bills. The last Service Plus Maintenance was performed April 2, 2013. The last call was May 20, 2013 when we were called out due to the air conditioning system not cooling. One of the many steps and tools used in diagnosing a system is for the technician to use refrigerant gauges to check the refrigerant pressure. The resulting pressure reading gave clear indication that the unit was out of refrigerant. As a refrigerant system is a sealed system, the only way for this to happen is for the system to have one or more leaks, or the refrigerant was released through the valve. The best way to find a leak is through an electronic leak detector or in the event of an elusive leak, through the introduction of UV dye. When a system is so devoid of refrigerant that a negative pressure reading is obtained, the system should always be evacuated and if necessary a drier installed, after the leak is found and repaired, and before refrigerant is added. Our customer was given a quote of $705.00 for this work.
