The technician arrived at roughly 1 PM. Since we did not know the source of the leak, he had to check the bathtub and the toilet before determining that the leak was from the shower (there is a Jacuzzi bathtub and a separate shower). With no access panel to the piping where the leak was occurring, the plumber had to cut a hole in the drywall to gain access to the leak site. He noted that the piping in question was CPVC which, according to the secretary at Calfo & Haight, can become brittle over time. The house was built in 1997 so the CPVC is 19 years old. The plumber proceeded to turn off the main water line to the house. The shut-off is in the basement of the house. The plumber then fixed the original leak. Knowing that it takes a long time to get back up to the second floor master bathroom after turning the water main back on in the basement, my wife asked if she could help by using her cell to communicate with the plumber in case the leak was not fully fixed so that the water main could be quickly shut-off again. The plumber said that he did not help and that he was confident that he had fixed the leak. He then went down to the basement and turned the water back on , unaware that he had caused a new crack in the CPVC during the process of fixing the original leak. By the time he got back up the master bathroom to notice the new leak and got back down to the basement to shut off the water, enough water had leaked to caused significant water damage/staining to the ceiling in our kitchen. Additionally there was enough leaked water to flood onto the hardwood flooring in the kitchen. The plumber helped my wife clean up the flood by using towels to mop up the water and buckets or bowls to catch the residual dripping after the flood. He then proceeded to fix the larger crack that he caused during the process of fixing the first leak. He was apparently more diligent and/or careful during the secondary repair such that he did not cause another leak, but the whole process to fix a slow leak from the shower and the subsequent larger leak caused by the initial repair took more than four hours. The company claims that they are not responsible for the larger leaked that was caused by the actions of their technician/plumber. They choose to blame the CPVC and take no responsibility for the damages to the kitchen ceiling. In addition, they have been very poor at communication twice failing to call me back to discuss this after saying that they would do so. I will be reporting them to the Better Business Bureau and may end up having to take them to small claims court to get them to pay for the drywall/ceiling repair and repainting that resulted from the actions of their employee.  Not only have they continued to maintain that they are not at fault, they also just sent a bill where they are charging us interest on the non-payment of the bill that they refuse to discuss further with me and my wife.

The first time we used Calfo and Haight was on a recommendation from a friend. We had a heating unit installed in our primary home, and were having so much trouble with it, it was unusable. The company that installed the unit clearly had no idea what they were doing, The service tech from Calfo and Haight bailed us out of the situation, even going so far as to contact the heater manufacturer to make sure they were servicing it correctly. Since then we use this company for all our rental properties. They arrive quickly, prepared, and cordial. I have called them during 100 degree heat waves, and 10 degree cold spells, and they work without complaint. Their prices are extremely reasonable, especially when being called on an emergency, and their techs are very informative. I know they are being honest and not trying to take advantage.I would (and have) recommend them highly.
