The gas fireplace in my family room was letting in a lot of cold air during the winter. When I received the estimate from Kanicki, the estimator, Joe Worts, indicated that they would insulate my fireplace from the inside of my house for $1,200. I had received another estimate from Flametech for the repair from the outside for $1,500. Both estimators said the repairs would take a number of hours to complete. In fact, Flametech said it would take so long, there would be a hole in the house overnight so overnight temps would have to be above 40 degrees. When I asked Joe from Kanicki why he suggested the repair from the inside, he said it could be done either way. When the two repairmen showed up the morning of the repair, my sitter was at the house and I was at work. They asked her what they were there to repair. She was concerned that they didn't know what they were doing and called me. I called Kanicki and was told I wasn't on the books for an appt that day. After searching more records, they did say that the repairmen were from their company. I told them I was very concerned that people without any knowledge of what they were doing had showed up to repair my gas fireplace. Another person called Tom showed up and told my sitter to tell me that they were doing the repair from the outside. Less than 2 hrs later, my sitter called to tell me that they were finished. I asked her to ask them how they finished so quickly, and they said that they were just done. I called Kanicki to complain that the job was done in an entirely different way than estimated and for a lot less time. I was told that "that's the risk you take when you get an estimate." After speaking with several people, they agreed to charge me a total of $735.00. The next winter, the fireplace still leaked and my family room was still freezing. When I called Kanicki, they told me that because they reduced the price, they did not guarantee the work AT ALL. I ended up suing them in small claims court and lost because the Judge ruled that I agreed to waive the guarantee which I never did and never would have. I did not appeal the decision because it would have cost hundreds of more dollars and I've decided to pursue additional repairs instead. I would not recommend this company at all.
