basement waterproofing, wells, drain pipe

His name was Larry McElway. I am not sure if the last name is correct. It was basically the same approach but it ended up being a bit more. What Larry did was that with the exterior entry way he drilled underneath the floor and brought it in and rather than just running a PVC pipe, he actually cut the floor to create a French drain and laid a pipe from the window well where the water was coming in. He put a drain in there with a pipe down into the French drain and then ran that all the way over to the sump and brought in the exterior entry way into the sump. On the other side of the house he did the same thing. He put a French drain all the way around the house on the inside wall of the basement and then tied the window well drains into that and put a sump pump in that side. What really impressed us was that one day when they were working and it was raining quite hard, he noticed how much water was coming into the window wells. He went outside and started checking the down spouts and found that the down spout that drained into the street was blocked. He was out in the rain trying to open up the down spout drain so that it would carry the water away so that we wouldn't have the flooding problem we did. He tore that up and got it fixed and found where the block was. Actually, part of the French drain that he put in, he just wanted to make sure that there wasn't going to be any water built up along the foundation. That wasn't actually a part of the original project but he never charged us any extra for it. In my opinion, he went way beyond what I would have expected and he did an excellent job. We were really happy with him and his guys. We got several estimates and he was less than half of the highest estimate that we got for the same basic approach. He actually did more work than he contracted to do and then charged worth for the extra work. They did a very nice job when they concreted up the pass that they had to cut through the concrete floor. He was a great find for us. It has rained hard up there since and we went up and checked and it was dry as a bone and we were thrilled. What really got my attention was that he went outside when it was raining to see if he could find out what caused the problem. A comment he made was that he wished he had been there when it was raining so hard before because if he had, part of the project he probably really wouldn't have needed to have done. He felt that once we had the water directed away from the house properly, we probably wouldn't have needed the second sump pump and the drain. He did say that since we had a sump pump there that's probably not going to get a whole lot of water in it, we would need to go down and throw a bucket of water in there just to keep the pump running every now and again so it stayed in good shape.
