Asphalt Driveway Service
We were on our property when the owner approached my husband about paving the drive. He told us that he had just completed paving for a local farmer and extra asphalt left over. He said he could use up the remaining asphalt and pave our drive til the asphalt on the truck was used up and he would charge us $2.75 s.f. He also said he wouldn't charge us extra for the depth or labor, he just wanted to recoop his cost of the asphalt and not have to loose it. I told him I wanted the total expected cost, before he proceeded. I kept telling him that we didn't have the money and we needed to know what it would cost before he proceeded.
He came back later in the day with a couple workers and they did a very small portion of the drive. He did this before telling us the total expected cost. Our home is set way back off the road and the area he paved was at the beginning of the drive. is After completion, he told me that the cost of the job was $9,500. We, of course, were very shocked and upset with this as we had originally told him that money was short and only agreed to let him lay down the asphalt because he said he would only charge us the s.f. price. He then said he would reduce the price to $8,000. He said he used an entire truckload of asphalt??? How could that be if it was just leftover asphalt from the prior job.....and the area was small that he did?? The workmanship was shoddy also.
Afterwards I realized that this is probably how he gets all his work. He approaches the proposed customer and tells them he has leftover asphalt material and doesn't want to lose the money on it.....when in reality he is trying to hook you into a job where he can gouge you.
Saddest part of the entire thing is that he wiped out our savings....and I never had any intention to pave that drive at all. When he first approached us he seemed so honest. His salesmanship was very deceitful and after he completed the project, he said he told us things he never actually did.
I would advise anyone looking to have paving done to fully check out the company first. Additionally, if anyone approaches you to have any kind of work like this done......be very careful. These people are predators without any kind of moral conscience.
