I called Brenford South Animal Clinic and was able to get an appointment on the same day. My cat was obviously uncomfortable and I was distressed as a result. The staff at Brenford South was polite, professional and respectful toward me and patiently allowed me to explain the history of my cat's problems.
In order to get a better understanding of what was going on, the veterinarian on duty, Dr. Erin Giebel, needed to look inside my cat's mouth. When she tried to open his mouth, he yelled as though he was in pain. She calmly allowed him to settle down, and then used a swab to part his lips to see if there anything obvious that was causing him pain. Although she could only see inflammation, I was relieved that she cared enough to try and diagnose his condition while causing as little discomfort as possible.
She told me that he would need to be sedated to look in his mouth and get an x-ray because he was so anxious when she tried to examine his mouth. She said the main objective was to get him eating again, and he was given prescription wet food that he liked and an injected antibiotic so that I wouldn't have to cause him any additional discomfort by administering oral medication.
After about 5 days, he stopped eating again and I decided that euthanasia was the appropriate action. I called as soon as they opened and was able to get him in within an hour. The staff and Dr. Giebel were extremely supportive and kind, fully explained why I was making a good decision and allowed me the opportunity to be with him during the process. Moreover, they were gentle with him while administering the injection. My cat was given a peaceful death, and they continued to reassure me that it was the right decision to end his suffering. After he passed, Dr. Giebel looked in his mouth and saw a large tumor and explained that he was probably in a lot of pain.
They allowed me to spend additional time with him after the euthanasia, and told me I could stay as long as I needed. After I had finished saying my final goodbyes, they gently wrapped him in a towel and took his body to await transport to the cremation facility. A few hours after I came home, I received a single white carnation and sympathy card from Brenford South Animal Clinic. It was a kind and supportive gesture on their part and one that was greatly appreciated. His ashes were returned in a timely manner and I was able to have his remains back home before the holidays.
The fee for the initial visit, euthanasia procedure, cremation and returned ashes was reasonable as compared to similar experiences I've had with previous pets. But the most important aspect of this experience was the kindness and genuine concern I received from Dr. Giebel and Brenford South Animal Clinic. I will continue to use their services for my other pets and highly recommend them as professionals.
