Bottom line: Sussex Tree, Inc. (STI), provided outstanding emergency tree service and performed under tight time constraints following extensive terrain damaged caused by Tropical Storm Jonas. Details: We purchased our Slaughter Beach (SB) property in December 2015 and experienced Mother Nature?s furry just weeks later when Tropical Storm Jonas hammered Delaware?s Eastern Shore. The January 2016 storm did extensive damage along the Delaware Bay's shoreline. At our Slaughter Beach property Jonas' storm surge topped the protective berm and devoured a beach-front area measuring approximately 20 by 80 feet. Several old-growth, Japanese Black Pines were ripped out of the destroyed area and deposited down the beach. We paid a contractor to remove the dead trees immediately following the storm. Three large pines were left standing, but much of their root system?which had been several feet below grade before the storm?had been exposed by sand erosion caused by the storm surge. We had thought we might save these damaged pines. However, on 15 March 2016, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources (DNREC) arrived with heavy equipment to scrape/push sand from beach in order to partially restore the protective berm and associated level terrain that Jonas destroyed. On 16 March, after consulting with DNREC officials on site and with neighbors native to the area, we understood that our three large pines could not be saved after their root system had been exposed to salt water. This revelation put us in a challenging time crunch ? unless we had the doomed pines removed by roughly 9AM on 17 March, DNREC would not be able to properly restore a large section of the berm/terrain protecting our property. We moved quickly to search Angie?s list using key words ?emergency tree service.? STI was in the results, had excellent reviews, and offered a 10% discount to AL?s members, so we called at 10AM on 16 March. Owner/arborist Jeff Meredith diverted resources from other projects in order to get a crew to our property before DNREC?s bulldozer started work on the berm on 17 March. Within roughly an hour of STI?s arrival on the job site, our Black Pine problem was resolved. STI?s team included 5 men, one of whom was an arborist. They were well equipped with heavy machinery, including a mobile, remote controlled stump grinder. The STI team was friendly and professional, and thoroughly removed debris after the job. The work by STI and DNREC significantly restored the terrain damaged by ST Jonas. And needless to say, we?ll be calling Sussex Tree anytime we need tree work in the future. We do hope to replace the pines that Jonas destroyed.
