Before contacting National Roofing, we had the unfortunate experience of other roofers collecting our money and scamming us. Those other roofers did not repair our slate roof, but rather, made the problem worse. We told Mr. Martin about our previous bad experience with other roofers. He assured us that not only would he repair the leak the other previous roofers did not fix, but he would perform the routine maintenance required with a slate roof, as well. In showing his concern for what we had previously experienced with other roofers, he did not require a deposit from us. Instead, he said that we could pay for the job when the work was done. Additionally, he gave us a generous discount on the work without reducing the quality or taking shortcuts. We agreed upon the date the work would be done weather permitting. Mr. Martin accompanied his team to our house on the day the work was done. They were very professional. He removed necessary slate and replaced them with slate of equal quality. He removed work that had been done improperly by other roofers in the past. And he replaced it correctly. They worked about a half day until the work was completed. They left nothing behind for us to clean up. Today there was the first big rain since the roof repair was done by National Roofing with Mr. Martin's careful supervision. No more leaks! It feels so wonderful to see the problem roof has been repaired and there is no water coming in the house. We are very satisfied with Mr. Martin and his very professional work. We will certainly use him if there is a need again. And we highly recommend him to anyone in need of roof repair. What a relief knowing that the problem has been taken care of. Mr. Martin told us that if there is any problem at all with our roof to call him and he will take care of it. We finally have an outstanding roofer to maintain our slate roof.
Description of Work: We were very surprised that Mr. Martin came out the same day we called him. He took photos and told us what was needed to repair a leak in our slate roof.

Robert was thoroughly professional and deeply knowledgeable. After we explained in greater detail our issues, he told us up front that we needed certain specialists for our issues, and provided helpful recommendation for who could do the work. We would absolutely call him back for other issues in the future.

The estimator was prompt, listened to what I wanted done, talked me out of something that really wasn't needed and prepared a timely proposal. The quote provided was in the middle of the six numbers I got before deciding to go ahead with the work. The company worked to make sure the job was done inside the calendar year so I wouldn't loose a tax deduction. The crew who did the work was prompt, respectful of the property, cleaned up after themselves and made sure I was happy before they left.

As I said above, it was our usual great experience with Robert.
Description of Work: We've been working with Robert since we bought our house in 2005. He did a complete overhaul and then routine maintenance a couple of years later. Our house just went on the market and we had a complete resurfacing done so that it would be pristine. All 3 times I went up on the roof and the work was perfect. Robert is as honest as they come and his costs are very fair.

Robert was very responsive in coming out to inspect my roof and coming up with a way to deal with an old-fashion skylight that was letting water and debris into my bathroom. His inspection uncovered areas where the roof needed flashing and sealing as well as areas where slate tiles had slipped or broken due to a combination of age and mediocre workmanship by prior owner. He returned within two days and took care of all the problems areas. In addition, he and his crew fixed several little things they found along the way at no additional cost. He knew that price was an issue, and he worked very hard to make the work affordable without sacrificing quality. National Roofing is my go-to roofing company for maintenance and repairs.
Description of Work: Robert and his crew sealed/closed the venting portion of a 1920s skylight and sealed the glass, sealed the chimney with flashing, repaired peeling roof ridge, and replaced + re-attached broken and loose slate roof tiles.

National Roofing was an excellent choice to repair my roof. Mr. Robert Martin was very responsive and accommodating. I actually requested an estimate with Mr. Martin back in July 2012. He took me up to the roof; and provided me with a thorough and understandable description of my repair needs, my options, and the lowest estimate between two other roofers. Surprisingly, 6 months later, Mr. Martin honored the estimate and fixed my roof the day after I called. It was a seamless transaction. I will recommend National Roofing to friends and will use the company in the future.
Description of Work: The seller’s developer had damaged a brand new roof by inserting and ineptly flashing several venting pipes which caused leaks in the ceiling. I was unable to properly repair the damage. National Roofing completed the following to address the damages and leaks: Removed excess roofing membrane and vent pipe collars. Install base sheets were needed. Installed Firestone APP-180 Granulated Modified Bituman to areas including the rear edge where sun-porch roof extension meets the main roof, and flashing of and roofing surrounding all vent pipes and chimneys. Install 4x4 Galvanized angle to rear extension roof using simplex nails. Repaired and sealed gutter outlet.

My wife and I have been dealing with a roof leak (which manifested in our master bedroom) at our Capitol Hill row house for the majority of the time we've been in our house (we bought in May 2011). we had another roofing company do some repair work in july 2011 and then again (for free) in the months after to try to address remaining leaks. unfortunately, the leaks did not go away. in fact, with Hurricane Sandy this past fall, the leaks came back with a vengeance -- worse than ever. We brought Robert Martin's National Roofing company in for a new estimate (we got a few estimates in fact). I found Robert highly recommended on Angie's list and he also was currently doing a job on my friend's roof down the street -- and my friend had solid reviews of Robert's professionalism and "bedside manner" so to speak. I enjoyed the same experience in my interactions with Robert, and with his team (including head roofer Sebastian). Robert called me back almost immediately after my initial contact (despite the fact that he was out of town on vacation at the time). While out of town, Robert scheduled with me to have his lead roofer, Sebastian, come over and evaluate the roof. this happened promptly and Sebastian shared pictures and feedback with Robert. Robert quickly turned around an estimate to me which he scanned and emailed to me. He also called me to walk me through his thinking based on Sebastian's evaluation. I told him I was still accepting a couple other estimates before proceeding. Robert was understanding and also patient as I want through the process. he was always prompt when I checked in. Ultimately, I decided to go with Robert, as no other estimates overweighed my customer experience and sense of security with Robert's operation. He even worked with me to meet another competitive estimate from a respected local roofer. Robert's in person patience and knowledge was my favorite part of the experience. Robert came over on his own the morning of the project and met me to discuss the project and take me up to the roof to walk things through. Robert explained the areas of concern and rationale. He explained things in a way that I could really understand. We even talked a bit about the history of Robert's company -- which is a generational family company. Robert's been doing roof work for his entire professional career (and during his earlier years as well) -- a total of about 20 years of personal experience thus far. It's only been a couple weeks since the repairs were made, but we are proud to say that we survived our first major deluge (which occurred last week) completely unscathed. My fingers will remain crossed for a while -- if only because i'm a somewhat superstitious guy and we've had so many challenges prior to the National Roofing repair. I truly hope Robert's repair work does the trick, over time! Bottom line: I highly recommend National Roofing.
Description of Work: The project involved installing strips of new Firestone 170 smooth modified bitumen roof membrane over many cracked and exposed seams in the upper half of our flat-roof rowhouse in Capitol Hill -- including over some rusting metal flashing at the front of the house and the triangle-shaped facade in front (they covered that entire piece with the 170). Robert's team also rebuilt my roof-access hatch lid using the same 170 material, and repaired a ventilation area that had poorly-installed flashing around the protruding vent. finally, Robert applied some clear silicon to some brick at the upper front of the house that seemed to have degraded mortar.

During hurricane Sandy we discovered a small leak in our largest skylight, a leak without an obvious source. I found National Roofing on Angie's List, and Robert promptly responded to my email and scheduled a roof inspection. He walked me though all his findings and provided quotes for multiple options, from basic patching, to skylight replacement, and more comprehensive roof repairs. Robert also patiently answered my many questions, making us feel confident in our choice of repair option and selection of roofer. The roof repairs were completed less then a week from the time I contacted National Roofing and we've been very satisfied with the results. The recent heavy rains have proven no match for Robert's repairs; he even politely followed up with us to ensure everything was working out.
Description of Work: Repair of 36" sky light curbing, removing old cracked material and replacing with bitumen rubber sheeting. Also accomplished multiple small patches or cracking in roof surface, or where nails had ruptured through the surface, and complete roof coating with aluminized fiber and paint.
This project went very well overall. The day I called for an estimate, Mr. Martin sent someone over and before the end of the day I was emailed pictures and the estimate. Once I re-contacted him to accept his terms, we decided on a start day; and then the weather went bad for four days of rain. Mr. Martin sent me an email every day to let me know when they planned to start the repair work; which had to be rescheduled as the forecast extended the rain. His men began on Friday and finished the job on Saturday. They were professional, efficient and fast. I would definitely recommend this company to others.
Description of Work: I have a flat roof semi-detached house which needed quite a bit of work on the side and rear and chimney work. National Roofing removed rear/side gutter, rear fascia and soffit, and side fascia from house. Installed new wood fascia board, new aluminum/vinyl soffit & fascia to rear and new K-style gutter to rear & side of house. They also repaired various bad areas on main flat roof and front porch roof and coated the main roof, front porch roof and small side roof with a fiber asphalt aluminum roof coating. Additionally, they replaced a missing slate with new slate and removed the existing chimney cover and installed new chimney caps.

Members of his team showed up to look at the roof unannounced, and they left the same way they came. No one spoke to me about any damage seen or any suggested repairs. I sat around until dark waiting for them to come in and talk to me about what they saw. Two days later I received an email with a list of repairs and the charges. I never had the opportunity to share what the actual problem was, so how was I to be sure that the repairs would even fix the problem? When Robert Martin called, he told me that he did me a favor by fitting me in when the members of his team came, and that he did me a favor by coming out to do another estimate when I never paid him to do any work from the first estimate. He said he felt like he was putting too much money into this interaction since I had not paid him anything yet. Little did he know, I was prepared to pay him for the first write-up and the recent one--over $7000 in roofing, gutter, and siding work. I would not recommend National Roofing based on poor customer service and unprofessionalism.
Description of Work: Robert Martin came to my house to give an estimate over the summer and fixed my gutter issue, no charge. He gave an estimate for some other work that was too high, so I did not move forward with the work. I knew he would do I good job, so I reached out to him when my roof began to leak. My second encounter with him was extremely unprofessional. The conversation about an estimate ended with him hanging the phone up on me.

Response from National Roofing
We are all in complete shock at this members interpretation of what took place . First off , half of what she has said is just not even true. We did come out to the house last summer and fix a little problem free of charge and gave her an estimate upon her request for some work that I told her I didn't even recommend doing at that time and that what we had done free of charge would most likely solve the problem . last week I received a call from her saying that she was so impressed with us, our honesty, and the fact that we did not try and sell her unnecessary work last summer that she wants us to give her an estimate on some other work that was needed. I explained that I was out of state and that I always give the estimates myself and that my guys were very busy and probably wouldn't be able to get to her before they left for their yearly vacation in about a week, but that I would see what I could do . I rearranged existing jobs and other scheduled estimates that my guys were having to do for me to fit her in on that following Saturday after 1:00. I explained that they would be there sometime after 1:00 to look at it . They showed up as promised . Sebastian came to the front door and she told him what she was wanting to do and he told her that he was going to take a look at the roof , take pictures and notes , talk to me , and that I would get back to her with an estimate . That's exactly what he did. I don't know why she sat in the house until dark, she was told that I would be the one contacting her to discuss what was needed after he and I went over everything. I then wrote and emailed a detailed estimate on the following day ( Sunday , not 2 days later ) , which was on my day off , but I was trying to get it to her quickly . I called her Monday morning to discuss what needed to be done and was immediately told that she was very unhappy with the way that this whole thing was going. When I asked why , she angrily said " because your men came out and looked at the roof and left and then I got an email from you asking for money " . I explained that emailing an estimate for the necessary work is not really " asking for money " . It was a proposal for the work that needed to be done to stop the problems ( that's what she called for ). I reminded her of what Sebastian and I had both told her , that he would look at it , talk to me and that I would get back to her with the estimate. She was angry that we did not go into the crawl space and look for damage on the wood and on the floor of the crawl space . I explained that we usually do not go into the crawl space because it doesn't really tell us anything and can give us false information. She said , " well I would have had you check the damage of the ceilings and the floor of the attic so I can know what's going on" . I told her that is not a type of work that we do and that she would need to get a drywall or plaster contractor to look at it. Even after being told that I do not do that type of work and wouldn't really have a reason to look at it from the attic , she was still very mad at which time I tried to tell her that my guys did not have an unlimited amount of time to spend since we had to rearrange our schedule just to fit her in . She then said , I don't have the money to do the work and was hoping that they would have went in the attic to try and pinpoint the various leaks so that they could be patched with just small repairs . I told her that going into the attic would not tell us anything different , the leaks had already been found on the roof. She asked me very abruptly what I was calling for and I told her that I was calling to go over what was needed and to discuss the estimate as we said we would , but she didn't even seem interested in discussing what was needed . I told her that I couldn't understand what she was upset about and I explained that I had done everything in my power to get to her within a couple days of calling and that it was not easy to do so because my guys were extremely busy . I explained that we were booked weeks out and I had to rearrange our whole schedule to squeeze her in on that Saturday afternoon , I emailed the estimate within 24 hours on a Sunday , followed up the next morning with a call and was now being told about how upset she was with us . We done everything exactly as we said we would and provided a very fair estimate within a very short period of time . She at no time asked or invited Sebastian to come inside to go inside the attic or look at the leaks. If she had of asked him to look in the attic he would have done just that , even though we normally don't , unless there is a specific reason to. I honestly think that this member was mad because we did not fix the problems free of charge as we did before . But it was not possible this time for us to do that. There was far too much work needed to fix all the different leaks she had . We are very patient and courteous with our customers as our other reviews show. I just don't know how much more we could have done here to please this member . The first time I was at her property I spent about an hour or so on an extremely hot summer day trying to locate her problem and fixed a minor issue free of charge while trying to explain to her that I would not spend any money on anything else at that time. This time I had jumped through hoops just to get the guys over there for her on such short notice and provide an estimate and was still not able to please her or at least have her appreciate the fact that we were trying to go above and beyond to accommodate her. All that I had tried to do to please her in the past , and this time , and I get an F for doing so . I never even received a review for doing stuff free of charge last summer . And this time after bending over backwards to meet her needs I get an F , I'm not even sure what for. I guess some people just don't appreciate anything you do. Also she states in her review that she was gonna have us do both jobs ( this estimate and the one from last summer ) yet on the phone she told me that she didn't have the money to even do just the roof repairs from this estimate and that's why she was hoping that we could go into the attic to try and pinpoint all the leaks so we could do small repairs . It seems as if she is mad at me because the estimate was more then she could afford or that I didn't do it for free , both of which is very unreasonable . We already know where the leaks are coming from and going into the attic was not going to change the scope of work needed . They're not little holes that we can just plug up with some caulking . At no time did I say that it was costing me too much money to deal with her or that she never paid me for the previous estimate . All estimates are free and we are extremely patient with customers as my other reports prove . I'm not gonna defend all these false claims of what I said or hanging up on her . She knows what's true and what isn't . I will let people judge the situation for themselves. I will let other members speak of my character and integrity , instead of defending myself against false claims. My other customers and other reviews are much more telling of how we do business and treat our customers then this member .

When I first called Robert to see about scheduling an estimate, he was in the area and stopped by the house shortly after we spoke. He forwarded me pictures of the roof, called to discuss the issues he spotted, and provided me with an estimate. I had two skylights that were broken and needed replacing. I also needed a chimney cap and a new hatch. In addition, there were a number of roof maintenance issues due to sloppy installation of the roof. Because of the way the bathroom fan was vented through the side of one of the original 1932 skylight, Robert first drafted an estimate that would allow me to keep the original vented walls of the skylights and would be less costly. Upon further reflection, I asked him whether I should get rid of the vented walls and get an entirely modern skylight. Robert was very patient with me and walked me through the positives and negatives. He even sent his crew out to do a second estimate. I ended up going with the modern skylights. The first day work was scheduled the weather was terrible, so it was cancelled. But the crew came the very next day and managed to complete everything in one day. They were professional and efficient and cleaned up the site. I am very satisfied with the work and feel that it was a fair price. I also did not feel like Robert tried to upsell me on anything and took budget concerns into considerations. As a result of the skylights, I am going to have to have the bathroom fan exhaust rerouted through the roof. Robert offered to check the roof out after the HVAC people do their work to make sure everything is ok. In sum, I am very satisfied with the work I had done and would trust National Roofing with any future projects I may have.

Mr. Martin was very responsive and came to do an estimate the same week I contacted him. He provided pictures and a detailed description of the repairs included in the estimate. In the end I went with another roofer because National's estimate for the work was nearly twice that of the next highest estimate, and the additional work for that price didn't seem worth it to me.
Description of Work: The metal roof of my 1920's townhouse needed repainting and repair. According to the estimate, the tin was separating in some areas, flashing needed repair, the entire roof needed scraping and other repairs, a large section of gutter needed to be replaced by single piece gutter, and all gutters needed to be cleaned.

I would first like to say thank you for the review , especially since we did not do any work . So thanks again. As for the difference in the pricing , it is clear that we were going to be doing a lot more work than the roofer you had do the work. But I am I little confused about the grade for pricing and the statement about being nearly double the next highest bid , when under your reports to other companies you state that you paid $3,800.00 to just have the roof coated , by the company you did hire. And the $3,800.00 that you paid did not include a new gutter . We were going to be installing a new gutter and probably a new fascia board , and most likely they weren't doing the same amount of repairs to the roof before painting it , especially using new roofing to do those repairs as we were going to be doing. But my concern is that the other members that read your comment about our estimate being almost double what you paid are not getting an accurate story . Double what you paid would be $7,600. , since you paid $ 3,800 . Our price was 5,850 before your 10% Angie's list discount , which would have brought it to $5,265. and would have included the gutter , and fascia if needed. We are competitive with the higher quality roofers when the scopes of work are comparable . But it's impossible to compare two completely different jobs and say that the one who is doing way more work is higher , they rightly should be. Our estimate was around $1,400 more than what you paid and we were doing quite a bit more work , that the other company did not do. $1,400 is almost 40% higher , not even in the same ballpark as almost double . Which is unfair in my opinion since all the other members read these reviews and if the reviews are not based on the facts and are not accurate or fair it could paint the contractor unfairly and could be detrimental to their reputation. You have given us a B for quality and I'm not sure what it's for since we didn't do any work. Most members don't grade the quality if the work was not done. As our other reports show quality is never an issue . Perhaps you would be willing to reevaluate your grades / review . We welcome all reports , we only ask that they are fair , accurate and based on the facts. Thanks
Chris N.

Robert and team were wonderful. We had roof leaks during Super-Storm Sandy but no major damage so it was hard getting a good roof repair team scheduled. When I contacted Robert, he was obviously busy but he took the time to listen to me describe the leaking and creatively found time to come by and look. It all started with an improperly installed and leaking bathroom fan exhaust event. Robert did a comprehensive estimation of the needed vent repair/replacement and also suggested addressing other problem areas. He actually found several significant issues but he obviously wasn't trying to upsell me. What I appreciated so greatly was that he took lots of pictures and videos, emailed them to me and then spent a lot of time explaining them to me on the phone. That gave me the confidence that these needed to be repaired in addition to the roof vent. It would have been very easy for Robert to say, "You need a whole new roof," but he actually told me, "The material used has lots of life left but the installers just cut a few corners. We can fix that and give you several more years of life for the roof." Bottom line, he saved me a bunch of money and hassle while giving me the knowledge and confidence that the roof is now solid for the winter. Robert and team did all the repairs quickly and without hassle. He was very communicative and prompt speaking with me. Finally, I was out of town the entire time so his use of email pictures/videos and patience on the phone made the whole engagement work very well. I happily recommend Robert and National. Honesty, Professionalism and Expertise.

Robert was very responsive, and his experience and professionalism showed throughout the entire process. Everything was thoroughly explained to us at each stage of the roof replacement, as well as took pictures throughout. They cleaned all of the debris up very well, and he emailed me all of the finished photos for our records. You will find no better roofer in the DC area. National Roofing is well worth the price and peace of mind.
Description of Work: We had our entire roof removed and replaced, some wood replaced, a new skylight bubble and a new gutter.

We called Mr. Martin prior to Hurricane Sandy to inspect the roof and determine if any temporary caulking or other repairs were needed before the storm hit. He did not find anything but did recommend that we replace our porch roof, for which he provided a very fair estimate. After experiencing interior water damage to our walls from the storm, and after having been told by several window replacement companies that we did not need new windows, we asked him to come back out and inspect the parapet wall and the roof line where it connects with the exposed wall of our semi-detached townhome. He could not find anything that he felt would be the cause of our problems, but he did take about 30 minutes to speak with us about other possible issues that could be the cause and to make recommendations about how to address them. His honesty, knowledge and professionalism were refreshing and we would not hesitate to work with him in the future. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Mr. Martin came to our home to inspect our roof and make recommendations on how to mitigate interior water damage that we are experiencing during major rain events.

Contacted contractor by phone based on his prior work in neighborhood and Angie's List grading. Contractor came to home and inspected roofs that needed work/replacement. Contractor provided detailed estimate of work and cost; provided photos of repair work that had to be done. Parties later negotiated price reduction. Signed contract without issue. Work commenced within 2 days of signing contract and was completed in 2 days. Contractor was paid immediately in cash. Contractor provided photos of completed work. Mr. Martin, the contractor, was very knowledgeable, courteous and professional throughout the entire work period. He was on time, efficient, productive and diligent. He left the work site clean and without debris. He answered all technical questions in a very informative and clear manner. He worked with me on reducing costs without sacrificing quality. He inspired confidence in his ability to get the project done in a professional, efficient manner with a continuing emphasis on quality and workmanship. I would recommend him without reservation.

It went very well. Mr Martin came in and gave me an estimate that I could afford as a senior. I was impressed because Mr Martin took pictures of the roof and described the problems to me. He was able to show me what needed to be done to repair the roof. After the repair, he took pictures again and I could see the improvements that he made. No roofer had done this before. I was very pleased. I would recommend this company to any customer.
Description of Work: Broken slated were removed and replaced. Loose membrane was refastened on the flat part of the roof and bitumen roofing was installed to other areas of the roof.
