National Roofing was extremely responsive to my initial request for work. During a rain storm I noticed 4 separate leaks in the roof and I called them on the same day after viewing their reviews on Angies List. George graciously fit me into his schedule before the next scheduled deluge of rain and arrived on time for the scheduled appointment. He inspected the roof, provided an estimate, and was able to complete the work before the next rain storm hit. During the subsequent rain storm, I re-inspected the attic and noticed that 3 of the 4 leaks had been sealed while one persisted. I called George the next day and he returned immediately to re-inspect his work and apply a thicker re-sealant. All without a cost to me. More importantly, when I called them to tell them about the persistent leak, he made every effort to return immediately and apologize for the continued inconvienience. He applied a final coating of sealant around the skylights to ensure a waterproof roof, and I noticed zero leaks during this week's heavy downpour. George and his Father were professional, responsive, and took pride in their work throughout the whole process. I will absolutely use them again in the future and would highly recommend their services to all.

I was amazed by their thorough knowledge and willingness to be of help with information
Description of Work: I called to get an estimate. They were super professional and helpful on the phone. Once I explained what I had and wanted, they explained that what my alternatives were in a clear manner. They further informed me that they did not do the work that they recommended to me and gave me the name of a company that they thought would reliably help me with what they were recommending. It was so helpful and straightforward. Great attitude and willingness to help. I would definitely use them in the future for the type of services that they CAN provide besides what they did provide this time, which was extremely detailed helpful information. Thank you so much for saving me time and money

He said he could start anytime and I was encouraged by many good reports on Angie'slist. He gave me a fair price, but said he wouldn't do the replacement of the handrail that surrounds the roof. I hired another contractor to do the carpentrywork of replacing the handrailing, but she needed the old roof removed, then she had to set the post-holders for the railing, then the roof needed to be replaced. When I contacted National Roofers, the person there told me Robert was away until the beginning of March and that it wouldn't matter because they REFUSED to work with any other contractors!! Even though they won't replace the rail themselves they refused to work with the contractor who would! They said "other contractors" are always so unreliable that they wanted me to call them when the work was ready to be done and then they would try to fit me into the schedule. What a waste of time! So I'm supposed to wait to have them come rip off the roof, then have my contractor set the post-holders, then call them back and wait for another slot in their schedule? With no roof in the interim? I would never hire them after this behavior! I even called back to confirm that this was their policy.
Description of Work: I received an estimate from Robert Martin to replace a walkout roofdeck on the side of my home.

Response from National Roofing
This member seemed to be at odds with us from the very beginning. She was very irrational and disagreeable , even hanging up on us at one point. She was even upset with us for not doing railing work , we are roofers not railing contractors. We told her that she would be better to hire a general contractor ( who could do both jobs at the same time ) . We told her that we do not work directly with other contractors, for a variety of reasons. We told her that we could do the roof anytime. Apparently she was not willing for us to rip off the roof have them put the railing in and then have us put the roof on, she said she did not have the time to call us back when they were done. I don't know any other way to do it. She told us that " I'm a doctor and don't have time for this " . We have busy schedules too but I told her that we could do it at anytime. What more could you ask for. She was irate because we would not do all the legwork of dealing with the other contractor. It would have been an inconvenience for us to tear the roof off and then have to come back at a later date to put the roof on, but we would have done it. We tried to go out of our way but it didn't matter we just could not please her because we were not willing to deal directly with the other contractor, but that is our policy..

George (Robert's son) came over on time, provided a written estimate, and started on the roof repair as soon as I signed the contract. He provided additional warranty coverage to alleviate my concern of the sealant not working. He also told me to keep an eye out where the leak was and if it still leaked, he would come over the next day it wasnt raining. George was very professional and the cost was reasonable compared to other companies.

They were able to do the work relatively soon and they had a good prices estimate. They did a good job and I had no complaints.

They were a little late to our appointment, but I do must say it was worth the wait. They were very professional as well and they explained in detail what the work would consist of and how much time it would take. Unfortunately, they were also the one company with the higher cost for the job, so I decided to go with another company. But nevertheless, it was a good experience.

Robert was able to come by my house for an estimate within a few days. because we were only doing a partial replacement, he worked hard to find the exact roofing tile that had been used on the rest of my house. The team arrived when Robert said they would, the job took as long as he said, the crew worked hard despite high heat, and the price matched the estimate. the quality has been excellent -- we have had no issues despite the heavy rains of the past two months. I appreciate the quality, and also that their performance matched their claims and the expectations they set. I would use them again without hesitation.
Description of Work: National removed an old, failing slate roof from the front side of my house (the back and an addition had already been replaced by the developer we bought the house from). They also replaced our front gutter, which had been damaged during last winter's heavy snows.

i had a leaky roof. i was impressed by the professionalism. they went up on the roof, took photos, told me the roof needed patching and coating but otherwise was good for another 10 years. price was on the high side--$2500 for the work (which ended up taking them 5 hours) which i thought was expensive for patch and coating--using almost no materials, primarily labor. i had a bid from a reputable company i had used before for a new roof, including repointing the chimney, for $3600. but National was already here, seemed honest, i liked their angie's profile, so i told them to go ahead partly because a 2500 patch is still cheaper than a 3600 new roof. at the end of the day, we had a severe disagreement. they did not point the chimney. i told them pointing the chimney was part of the scope of work we had discussed. they admitted i had mentioned it but at the time i said it, they did not say "we do not point." because i was late for a meeting, i did not carefully review the contrac (my fault) t and did not notice the pointing was not included in the work. when it was time to pay, i was upset that the pointing was not done because i had said it needed to be done. national said it was not in the contract. i said it was part of the scope. so we went round and round. he said he does not point, i said other roofing companies do. we were butting heads, and he never offered to go up and do it. in the end, . he dropped the price a couple hundred, we had a rain yesterday and my ceiling looks dry. looks like the work is good, too bad we argued over the scope of the work. things ended on a bad note.

Originally two options were offered to me....a repair or replacement effectively. The company told me they don't do replacements on box gutters like this anymore, but could repair it. I was told in clear detail the pros and cons of each approach, and almost felt like they were trying to convince me to go elsewhere for a "better" option. Ultimately, I did not want to undertake the cost of doing a complete rebuild. After accepting the bid, workers were there the next day. Came at a reasonable hour, were polite and friendly. While I left shortly after they arrived...all work was completed by my return that afternoon. Quality appears fine, though guess a good monsoon rain storm will be the big test. All work was done without a deposit, only a handshake...payment was made after completion (actually several days after because of a weekend). When collecting, the work was re-explained and I was told to contact them if there were any problems that surfaced, maybe after that next monsoon. My only hesitation is on price. Given that my project was not very normal it was hard to know what it should cost going in. So the initial bid was a bit of a sticker shock...not the first time I have had that on home repair/remodeling this year. Still for someone who does a lot of his own work...it was unexpected. That being said the reputation that the company has here on Angie's assuaged my concerns. And I figure since I had them honor a 10% off coupon from this site for them...they probably were giving a fair number or else risking their stellar reputation. All in all, I was very happy with the work, and happy to have it done. Everyone that I spoke to from the father and sons that handled the front end of the business, to the crew that completed the job were all professional and polite.
Description of Work: Cleaning, relining with membrane of an old box gutter at the front of my 1870s era home in Georgetown. Also, they fabricated and created a connection to the downspout. Additionally, any openings in decorative elements were sealed in an effort to make the area "water tight".

The work was completed very quickly and on schedule. All of the leaks were fixed to our great relief. About 18 months later an intermittent single leak developed in the roof over the main bedroom following a major rain storm. I called Robert Martin who reacted very quickly and fixed the problem at no charge under warranty. Then in September 2010 the same leak problem re-appeared after some very heavy rain storms, again National Roofing were very responsive and took care of re-sealing. This leak may be due to rotting fascia board on my neighbors roof and is very difficult to seal without replacement - problem is it's on my neighbors property so National Roofing's can't do much about it . During this last visit I climbed onto the roof to check it's condition and it was in very good shape 3 years later. They give a 10 year Warranty for parts and labor. Both Robert and his Dad, George are very pleasant to deal with - I recommend these guys highly.
Description of Work: Since moving into our house in July 1998 we were putting up with numerous leaks in our roof that could not be fixed despite the efforts of two other local roofing companies. This was a very frustrating problem. We contacted National Roofing in summer 2007 and they removed the old patched up roof and replaced it with a new one.

After calling 5 roofing companies and getting 5 different diagnoses and estimates, I was sincerely disappointed with the list...how could it be that companies with A ratings were so frustrating? One of the companies sent me a contract without even going up on the roof (!); another contractor advised me to get a new roof (if I wanted to be sure about the results!); even another presented such an extensive list of repairs that it would cost me as much as a new roof (!). Frankly, I was ready to quit searching the list for a Roofing Company I could hire now as well as in the future (I know my roof is old and I'll have to replace it in a few years). I'm glad I haven't canceled the appointment with the National Company! Robert Martin arrived on time, was highly professional, courteous, and dedicated in his explanations about the problems and solutions to fix my leaks. Most importantly, National Roofing is a family owned and operated company and Robert is very knowledgeable and more concerned with establishing long term relationships with clients than just going from one job to the next. He took pictures of my roof (before and after) which are always helpful since I do not have access to the roof, and everything went smoothly and exactly as I was told. Robert explained all the work they did and I was very satisfied and relieved that I had finally found the right company...until two days later...when I woke up and water was coming down the ceiling on the first floor. I called Robert's cell number and in one hour he was on my roof again. There was nothing wrong with the roof and Robert and his father spent two hours trying to figure out where the water was coming from--it was the air conditioning! I felt so bad for calling them and more than once offered to pay for their visit and time, but no, they were more interested in maintaining a good relationship with their client. I highly recommend National Roofing and I am so happy to have a PROFESSIONAL company on my side for a change!
Description of Work: National Roofing performed the following work on my roof: removed the s*** stop from rear of roof (which was bent since a tree fell on the roof some years ago) and installed 3x3 galvanized angle to gutter side of extension roof; primed top of new metal and both vent pipes on extension roof with Henry's quick dry asphalt primer; installed section of angle to northwest corner of extension roof using simplex nails; installed modified bitumen roofing to perimeter of extension roof on north and east sides using torch down method; also installed modified bitumen roofing to both vent pipes and area where angle was being installed at northwest corner of extension; hauled away all debris from property.

One of the smoothest major projects we have done at our house. We got a fair estimate for the work. After signing the contract, they were able to schedule the work about a week later. The project was completed within two days. THe roof looks fantastic and is considerably thicker than the roofs on the other two row houses connected to ours because of the materials recommended by National Roofing.
Description of Work: We will be getting solar panels on our roof and wanted to get any work done prior to installation. They came out and provided an estimate and indicated that while the existing roof coating could have been touched up, they did not recommend it, because touch-ups would be more difficult once the solar panels were installed. They stripped off the old roof and replaced it with a new one and added the reflective silver coating.

We are very pleased with the quality of work that National Roofing provided us with, as well as their overall professionalism. After one of the stronger rain storms we have had recently, we noticed that the roof on our small extension was leaking. We consulted Angie's List and selected National Roofing from it. We called them and their diagnosis was that the slate roofing was not well-attached, and did not belong on a surface at that slant in the first place. They suggested that we replace it, though they told us that most roofers would be willing to give us an estimate on just patching it, so we could definitely do it more cheaply if we wanted to. He said they wouldn't do that, as eventually it would just start leaking again, and since they guarantee their product, it wouldn't make sense for either of us for them to go that route. We valued their honesty on that, and made the decision to go with the more expensive replacement, as we didn't want the next leak to cause damage. When they came out to do the replacement, the owner showed up to make sure the work was done properly and supervised the entire project. They even supplied us with a replacement gutter guard. The work looks great, and we feel as though they did it with integrity and care. We would absolutely use them again and plan to recommend them to anyone that needs a roofing job done.

Robert and his team arrived punctually and were quickly able to diagnose the problem. I especially appreciated their willingness to walk me through the issue, and answer all of my questions thoroughly. They were just easy to talk to and work with. They were able to fix my minor problem on the spot, and also pointed out a few other potential issues that may arise in the future, and fixed those on those on the spot as well. Overall I had a very positive experience with them, and I would certainly call them for any roofing issues.

The owners (a father and son team) came out to provide an estimate for repairing a shoddy roofing job on our rowhouse. Their evaluation of the condition of the roof and the necessary repairs was right on target with what we expected and exactly the same as that provided by some other contractors, which was an improvement over the few roofers who told us that we needed a new roof. They were very professional and seemed to take great care in maintaining a reputation for good work and reliable service. The estimate was within $50 of other estimates we received, so their pricing seems very fair. It was a little difficult to get them to set a firm time to come out to do the estimate, but I was updated with frequent phone calls over several days, letting me know whether they'd be able to make it out to look at the roof. I appreciated this a lot. And when they did come by, they showed up exactly on time. I had already been up on the roof several times with other contractors and I was aware of the issues, so I chose not to go up on the roof with them, but I still would have appreciated if they had offered to take pictures of what issues they saw. Not a big issue, but it might be nice for people who can't go up a ladder or are afraid of heights. In the end, the only deciding factor was that I felt that National Roofing couldn't work on my house as soon as the other company that I ended up choosing. They seem to have a very busy schedule, and with the storms we've had this summer, I didn't want to wait too long to get the work done. But that's really it. I wouldn't hesitate to have them work on my roof and will give them a call if I need a roofer in the future.
Description of Work: Remove modified bitumen roofing from main roof at front and rear. Install 4x4 galvanized angle and s*** stop to rear of main roof. Tighten metal flashing at front of main roof. Build new hatch lid and cover with modified bitumen. Prime all necessary areas of roofing and skylight curbing. Install modified bitumen roofing (torch down method) to various areas on main roof, including front firewall perimeter of rear, chimney flashing, skylight curbing, vent pipe, and front portions of common walls. Remove and haul away all debris from property. Basically, the roof wasn't sealed at any of the edges and water was penetrating to the insulation boards beneath and the tin roof under that. We were lucky a strong wind didn't peel off the roof and blow it off the top of the house.

The company came and did an estimate on skylight repair/replacement. They then called at my office to explain the estimate. They then knocked on the door to give the written estimate to my boyfriend, who does not live there but was there at the time. The estimate was fair, the information provided was accurate; and I have no doubt Martin Roofing would have done a good job. However, since the contractor who came chose to tell my boyfriend that he was going to explain it to him as well because women didn't always understand these things, I will be going with another contractor.

Response from National Roofing
As stated no work was done for this member . We only provided an estimate . When we spoke on the phone this member said that she was not home but that her boyfriend was home . There was no mention of him not living their . After looking at the roof and taking pictures I called this member at work to explain to her what we found , what was needed , and that I was leaving some pictures and an estimate at the property . When it came time to leave the pictures and estimate I felt that there was a couple things that needed to be explained about the photos and estimate , that we didn't have time to go over on the phone due to her being at work . Instead of disturbing her at work again , I decided It would be better to show her boyfriend and let him explain it to her when she got home from work . When the customer is their I normally take quite some time to try and explain everything . I knocked on the door and explained the photos and a couple other details to her boyfriend because he was at the property and could relay the details . I am not sure if this member got insulted by me doing that or if her boyfriend did not want to be disturbed but I can assure you that nothing was meant by our actions . Those words that this member's boyfriend stated was said , were never spoken . We were only trying to make sure that everything was explained and did not want to keep calling this member at work to do so . We were told by this member that her boyfriend was their if needed . We surely did not mean anything by it . And if I had have known that she did not want me bothering him , I would have never disturbed him . We do not care what gender the person is we speak to , we try and explain everything in detail to every customer so that they can make an educated decision . As our other reports can show , ( you can look at our very first Angies list report ) we have a very good reputation for treating all our customers the same whether male or female . We only spoke to this members boyfriend , to explain , what we did not get to talk to this member about . We apologize for any misunderstanding . If something I said could have been mistranslated or taken the wrong way I am truly sorry . This report is the first time I'm hearing about this and If was given the chance would have tried to explain the miscommunication beforehand . Sincerely , Robert J. Martin

Returned phone call promptly and came the next day for estimate. The estimator was very nice but told me that our row house had the worst roof he'd seen in two years. We have no leaks just a very old roof that needs to be replaced before a full gut renovation. So it wasn't a surprise that his estimate was 20-30% higher than the other 7 estimates we received for the same work. Needless to say, we won't be using them.

Response from National Roofing
We would like to respond to this member's comments . As stated we did not work for this member . It is hard for me to comment or compare the other 7 estimates that was given to this member by different roofers because I know nothing about them . I would like to say that we are on a variety of roofs everyday . This particular roof like so many others we see , had been installed improperly . When somebody calls us for an estimate and inspection we tell them exactly what we see whether it's good or bad . Customers deserve to be told the truth . Our company is not the cheapest in town as we will be the first to say . We do not strive to be . So many roofs we see today are put on by inexperienced roofers or roofers who are so concerned with lowering the price to compete that they sacrifice the quality of the job at the home owners expense . We would urge customers to not let cost be the only factor in their decision making process . So many times we get on roofs that are only a few years old and are leaking already because of poor installation or inferior materials used , and we come to find out that the owner went with the cheapest estimate with the idea that they ( the roofers ) were all doing the same thing . We can not use the best materials and put as much effort into each job as we do for the same cost as the guy who is just gonna put on the cheapest materials as quick as possible with no concern for quality . We try and provide high quality workmanship and service at an affordable price . We know from experience that it's not cheap when you have to pay to do the whole roof again after only a few years instead of having a roof installed properly the first time that will last for decades . Replacing a roof is a very complicated thing and a very important investment when you own a house . Our advice to homeowners is that they look for an honest , reputable roofer that is concerned with doing the job properly at a fair price . Sincerely Robert J. Martin National Roofing

I was very impressed from the estimate through to the work itself. Robert and his son visited to review our entire roof, not just the corner where we were having water trouble. They carefully spent time explaining to use what they saw, including sharing pictures that they took. They also proposed some additional scope as an option (gutter, slate roof repairs), which they uncovered through their thorough assessment of our roof. Robert was very responsive to our questions as we debated what to do and which roofer to use. I sensed he was extremely knowledeable and able clearly communicate in laymens terms the issues he found and why he felt his solutions to them were the right ones. They completed the job in one day and took subsequent pictures to share the work. I have since been on the roof, and was impressed with how good the job looked. I'm not totally convinced yet that the water penetration into the wall is solved as there still signs of potential water, but I am certain it's not coming from the roof and the source is something else (i.e. chimney, brick, etc.). I would highly recommend National Roofing to others. Robert was more expensive than 2 of my 4 estimates by a decent amount, but right in line with a 3rd. The difference b/w the two cheap estimates the two more expensive ones were the proposed work. Robert proposed a more permanent solution than a simple patch that others proposed, and we felt we wanted that more permanent solution, so I felt he was very fairly priced.
Description of Work: Robert and crew applied bitumen rubber to one corner of our flat metal roof as well as to the vent pipe for the AC unit on the roof. Additionally, they replaced our front gutter, which was damaged during the winter storms and repaired a few missing slates on the front dormer roof. We had them out in the first place b/c we have water penetration on an adjoining plaster wall with the rowhome next door, and after multiple reviews by various people, we thought it most likely to be from the roof, even though it isn't conclusive yet.

From estimate to job completion, the entire operation took about 10 days. The company kept me informed of progress and any setbacks (it rained one day), and stuck with their estimate. After, they did an excellent job cleaning and removing waste. I appreciate their dilligence, communication, and especially punctuality - each time they said they would be at the house for anything, they were there. I will use them again to replace a smaller roof not addressed in this repair.
Description of Work: Replaced shingle roof with architectural shingles, replaced gutters and downspouts.

I contacted this company today to replace my metal roof. The representative stated his company no longer worked with metal roofs and provided me with two of his competitors who were still in that aspect of this business. I found this refreshing and appreciate the courtesy he provided me for alternatives.

The story has been told above and I must admit that they exceeded my expectation that is set very high. They are not the least expensive but they were very fair in their pricing and would be used again in a heartbeat. They provided extremely high value for their services and were very specific in the services they were to provide. It was one the best contracting experiences I have had.
Description of Work: Company replaced a skylight as well as repaired leaks to the roof. Robert Martin was very professional, making sure he set a specific time and then calling ahead of that time to confirm. He then showed up when expected. He was able to provide alternative dates of his service, including a quick response the same day. The crew was polite, quick and made sure that everything was cleaned up before they left. In fact, they actually cleaned more of the area than where they worked. I referred them to my neighbor who also used them and was just as happy. They are a class act and did exceptional work.

This is an excellent family-owned business. Extremely pleasant to work with. Prompt reply to my call for an estimate. Gave an estimate one day and were here the following day with a crew, including the owner and son. Gave thought to what needed to be done and didn't try to sell me something that would not work in our situation (like expensive gutter guards). Appreciated their honesty, workmanship, and responsiveness.
Description of Work: Repaired damaged and downed gutters from this winter's storms. Replaced an old gutter on the top roof line, installed new downspout and connectors to existing gutter system, sealed several potential cracks and corrected previous incorrect installations. Cleaned Gutters.

Robert Martin, the owner of National Roofing, came over to my house as soon as the weather permitted him. I told him (over the phone) that I had a leak in the back of the house, but I was not sure how bad the leak was, but there were water stains on the ceilings. (I thought it may be ice damming from the recent snow storms.) When he arrived, I showed him the water marks on the back ceiling of the second floor ceiling and first floor ceiling--the water must have been going down the back wall to the ceiling of the first floor. He and his son (also with the same name, RJ) went up to the roof and assessed what needed to be done. They believed that the immediate problem was the back drip edge. It definitely needed to be replaced because it was old and rusted, and in addition the rubber roofing was starting to peel off of the rusted metal drip edge and most probably the cause for the leak. He also believed that it was a good idea to replace the side edge as well, and cover the roof properly with the APP-170 smooth modified bitumen roofing along the whole area above the sunroom. They also believed that the flashings and both skylight curbs needed to covered by the same type of roofing using the torchdown method because the previous owner apparently had only taken measures that were temporary fixes. Mr. Martin took a comprehensive approach and told me exactly what he wanted to do. He explained to me carefully that to properly ensure that the roof was done correctly--the drip edge should be sandwiched between two Firestone APP-170 smooth modified bitumen roofing and sealed together. After speaking with him, I believed that his assessment was accurate. I called Robert Martin the next day to come by as soon as he could. After looking at his schedule, he, his son, and crew of two came by that afternoon (Friday) and got to work. Robert Martin, his son, and crew were very professional, knowledgeable, and hardworking. They started the work at about 1PM and ended by about 4:30PM. Robert Martin's son RJ and his crew of 2 did most of the actual manual work on the roof, but Robert Martin when up to the roof and examined all of the work that was done at the end, and his son also provided photos of what was done. I appreciated the thoroughness and pride in the work they did. The price for the work is reasonable and has value, because of their thoroughness, their guarantee on the roof, and good work. (I cannot be sure that the problem is fully solved, but so far I believe the work was very well done.)
Description of Work: National Roofing removed the drip edge in the back of the row house: this includes the back drip edge and the edge along the back side of the house. They installed one layer of modified bitumen upside down nailed to where the new drip edge angle would be installed. They then installed 3X3 galvanized angle (drip edge) in the back and 3X3 galvanized s*** stop for the back side of the house. They then installed a Firestone APP-170 smooth modified bitumen roofing over the new drip edge (sandwiching the drip edge with two layers of the modifed bitumen) to the entire extension portion of the main roof in the section over the sun room portion of the house starting from the drip edge (near the gutter); they installed the same roofing on tops of new metal flashings, both skylight curbs, and necessary decking around skylights using the torch down method. They also halled away and swept any debris that was left on the roof and the back of the house. (They also provided photos of each step of their work so that I would understand what was done to the roof.)

He went up on the roof and took pictures. He provided the pictures in his proposal so I can see part of what he saw. The proposal isn't as detailed as I would have liked, but it does offer details and I can contact and communicate with them easily, which is a bonus. He was very communicative. He came when I needed him to come and provided me information that I needed. He provided pictures to back up what he was saying. I would recommend him. You can reach him by email or telephone. He was pretty punctual. I am waiting on another proposal to come through.
Description of Work: I got a proposal from National Roofing to reconstruct the entire turret because the shingles are coming off.
