Description of Work: Have a row home with EPDN roof and known past leaks, so wanted maintenance and repairs done before the summer rain season. I had several estimates and while National Roofing was not the cheapest quote, I felt Robert, the owner, gave me the most thorough and knowledgeable assessment and proposed solutions. Robert was prompt in responding to my follow-up questions and provided insurance and license info. Robert's team performed the work in one day and installed a custom coping, repaired the roof lid, and applied sealant to seams. They were punctual and Robert was there for the beginning of the job and also at the end of the day to inspect and walk me through the work performed. There has since been some heavy rains, so far so good (fingers crossed). Definitely would recommend and will work with them in the future.

We didn't end up using them because their quote was way too high. We found somebody that did the exact same thing for about half the price. We got a roofing certification from them. They charged us regardless of whether they could certify or not. They didn't charge for the estimate because I had to pay for the certification.
Description of Work: We used National Roofing to do a roof certification. They told me what was wrong with the roof and gave me a ballpark estimate.

Response from National Roofing
This member called us and asked about getting a roof certification for a property that he was trying to buy. We explained the terms and cost of the certification over the phone to which he agreed. Upon putting a ladder up to look at the roof we found that the main roof of the house had collapsed in the middle causing what looked like a swimming pool on what used to be a flat roof . We were not even comfortable walking on it . We explained that he needed to do major structural work before he could do anything to the roof and that we did not do that type of work . After we had him climb up the ladder to look at the roof he stated that he didn't think he was going to purchase the property. I told him that I would fill out his paperwork stating that it could not be certified as is . He asked us what it would cost to fix it and we told him we were not sure , that we didn't do that type of structural work . He then asked if i would put on the certification what I thought would be an approximate cost to have someone else fix it ( so that he could show it to the seller ) and i told him i would. The approximate cost on his certification was not an estimate for us to do work on the property but an opinion of what we thought it would cost to have someone fix it . As for us not charging for the estimate , we never charge for estimates . This member stated that he did not use us because the price was to high ' but he couldn't have used us because we didn't give him a price / estimate to do the work due to the fact that we don't do that type of work . We were trying to be helpful in doing what he asked so that he could take the paperwork to the seller with a rough idea of cost to fix the problems . There were no details to the approximate cost so i'm not sure what he means by did the exact same thing for half the price. This member has never received an estimate from us to do the work needed . For all i know he could have hired somebody to put a little patch over the caved in roof for half the price , i somehow doubt that he could have hired a reputable roofer / general contractor to rebuild the structure on top of the house and install a new roof to bring it up to code for $6,000. I apologize about any misunderstandings but we thought that we made ourselves quite clear .

I liked the guy who came out. I thought he was certainly pleasant and seemed very professional. He didn't actually get a ladder out to look at my roof, the part that was in the biggest question. The diagnosis seemed plausible, but when I looked into it further, I don't think that what he suggested as a fix was actually the problem. Part of the reason why I looked into it further was because his estimate was very high. I had spoken to 3 roofers in total. I am not going to use him partly because I don't believe that what he diagnosed was accurate and the price was extremely high. He didn't actually get a ladder and look at the roof to try to really understand what was going on. I don't think he did what he needed to do to figure out the problem. I think I would call them again for something where I know what the problem is. I didn't get an individual price for the part of the roof that needs to be replaced, so based on the price I might very well call them again. He did seem very professional, but regarding the difficult question that I had where it wasn't obvious what the problem was, I don't think he put in the effort to figure it out. The part of my roof that needs to be replaced is very obvious. It doesn't take a genius to figure it out.
Description of Work: National Roofing did an estimate on the roofing that included replacing one section of the roof, locating and fixing a leak in another section, and replacing 2 slates that had fallen out.

As stated no work was performed for this member . I am quite surprised at this members report and overall grade. She has stated in her report that we seemed very professional but gave us a C in professionalism . She had given A's in the other two categories but a D in overall grade . This member has stated that she doesn't think that the diagnoses was correct , but that is not based on any facts. She had paid a different roofer a number of times to fix what she thought was the problem with no success. We have been doing this for over 50 years and consider ourselves to be experts in roofing and diagnosing leaks. We will not just agree with a customers idea or thoughts just so we can get the job , we give honest advice to the best of our knowledge , and as people who we've worked for can confirm , we take pride in trying to find the leak the first time . The portion of the roof which was leaking could be seen from the ground with nothing to gain by putting a ladder up. I sincerely hope that she is right because it is not cheap to have to continue hiring somebody to fix the same problem over and over as she had stated to me. We try and give advice based on decades of experience and hope that the customer heeds it. When it comes to the cost we believe that the price quoted was very fair for the work needed . We do not claim to be the cheapest roofer in town nor do we want to be. Quality is not cheap but having the job done properly at a fair price has great value . We have to base our estimates on facts and what it will cost to do the job properly the first time .we can't base our estimates on preconceived ideas or suppositions. We do very good work and always stand behind it and by doing that at a fair price we give value to our customers .

Total waste of time, indifference to the inconvenience caused, no willingness to come up with a solution. Jerked me around for a few hours for no reason.
Description of Work: Called them and they said they'd be out to take a look at the roof. They showed up and told me they'd call me to tell me what the problem was. Hours pass and I heard nothing. Then I called the main # and they tell me he couldn't gain access which makes no sense. Total waste of my time!

Response from National Roofing
As noted no work was done for this member. We received a call from this member for an estimate and responded to the request by going to the property within the same morning of the call. We did not ask the member to be there to make it more convenient for her. Once at the property it became obvious that there was no access to the property that would allow a large ladder. The gate near the front of the property was being blocked by an s.u.v. and about three feet of ice and snow. We did spend quite some time trying to access it, but it could not be done without risk to property damage. The time spent could be one reason for her call not being returned right away. We do not charge for estimates and the member was not at the property. We tried everything possible to try and gain access with our ladder but it could not be done at that time because of highly unusual snow and a car blocking the only gate to the property. We do apologize for any inconvenience to the member , but feel that she is being unreasonable about it. We would have been more than happy to give her an estimate on the work needed. We take great pride in the effort we put into pleasing our customers and making the whole process as easy as possible for them ( as our other reports show ). But do to very unusual conditions we were not able to look at the roof to give the estimate. We would have expected the member to be a little more understanding to the conditions due to the storm, we even had to park our trucks two blocks away because of the snow. I beleive if the member knew what is needed to safely gain access to the roof with ladders she would understand. We do apologize in any case but feel that the members responce was extremely unreasonable.

My roof had been leaking slowly during each rain and snowfall for about a month. I called National on a Thursday around noon and they came out around 2 pm. They inspected the roof and identified the problem, explained it to me, and gave me an estimate. Since snow was expected for that night, I accepted the estimate and they had their crew out there within an hour. They nailed down the loose section and melted a rubber layer on top of the section to seal it. The service was excellent. They came the same day, gave me an immediate estimate and fixed the problem that afternoon. In talking with other people, I think their price may have been a bit high, though.
Description of Work: National and their crew nailed down the loose, rear section of my house's mental roof and applied a layer of rubber to it to seal it thoroughly.

I was very satisfied with their punctuality and just how quickly they did the job I contracted them to do. They provided me pictures of the roof repair and it seemed more thorough than the other estimates I got. Their price seemed reasonable.

Robert came to do an estimate, took before pictures and explained the problem. After his estimate, he made the roof a priority because of the leaking and possible rain that weekend. He was able to do the work while i was away and answer all of my questions.
Description of Work: We noticed leaking through our 2nd floor ceilings. it was unclear where the leaks were coming from. Robert patched the roof in 4-5 places, including antenna removal, cleaned the gutters and seals other areas he thought could be a concern. Poor workmanship from the prior owner was causing leaking in the house. Robert was great.

I have used this company for several years and one issue we had was water missing the gutters coming over the dormers of my roof due to the angle the water came off the dormers. In previously doing a needed total gutter replacement project they installed the widest gutters available in the hopes that it would do the trick, and while we could have lived with water crashing down in certain places, we decided to do "phase 2" of the work, which entailed totally handmaking additional drainpipes to connect the various heights of the gutters (11 total). A lot of thought as to the design and a lot of work went into installing them. We also did a fair amount of slate replacements from the "mansard" part of our roof. In that the house is 40 years old and the prior owner neglected the roof for many years, there is always something. I have used this company since I bought the house 7 years ago for repairs and maintenance big and small such as removing a 6 foot tree from the top of the roof that was not visible from the ground, discovering that a leak in a bedroom ceiling was due to half of my chimney being filled with construction debris rather than masonry--luckily one of their crew used to build chimneys, and they even went to the paint store to match the color of the house, since my house is painted brick. This is a family-owned and operated business and is extremely prompt, courteous and neat, in addition to being competent. In DC and Maryland suburbs where most of the houses are old and have slate roofs, this is really important.
Description of Work: Installed custom downspouts which required complete designing and hand-making the needed items; miscellaneous maintenance repairs for slate roof.

Overall I appreciate the fact that Mr. Martin go through the length of explaining the details of the whole transaction - from providing insight to what are the problems, and then going through the possible options. He talked to me and not AT me...as a woman, I appreciate that - because majority of the contractors that I deal with would look at my husband more than at me. I so happen to like the details - and have appreciation for the technical merits of anything to with our home. I expect the contractors to give me the same credit as they do to my husband. In a nutshell - I appreciate National Roofing's professionalism, the quality of work is truly the icing in the cake!
Description of Work: The first instance we needed to engage with National Roofing was when we were just getting tired of performing an annual ritual of slopping rubber compound to prevent the leak around our skylight. We bought an 1889 rowhouse in DC in 2001 and finally called a number of roofing contractors to get a cost estimate. National Roofing called back in no time, the owner, Robert Martin was extremely professional - talked to me intelligently, going through the details of what needed to be done, and gave me the estimate. My husband and I decided to go forward with them considering the price and the experience first hand. Fast forward today - in the process of selling our home, our buyer's inspector noted two items that needed attention. We called National Roofing and consistent with our initial experience with them, they responded in a timely manner, provided the estimate and helped us address the issues noted.
