After doing some initial research online, I walked into Mattress Discounters to try out some mattresses and try to pick one for my wife and me. When I entered, I browsed for a few minutes before being politely asked by Raja if I would like assistance. I described my situation: I'm 6'1and quot; and 160lbs, my wife is 5' and barely 100lbs. She likes supersoft beds; I like very firm beds. I told him I wanted to spend under $1000. Raja thought for a moment, and then directed me toward 2 initial options, both from the lower-end (and less expensive) line. I tried both and Raja did an excellent job explaining the mattress technology and asked me several good questions about how the mattresses felt. His questions helped me focus my thoughts and he was very focused on my feedback, rather than on selling me any particular mattress. After trying the lower end models, he brought me to the models the next level up and repeated the information sharing and questions, which were very helpful. I told him that I wanted to walk across the street (to Sleepy's) and compare their offerings, and he strongly encouraged me to do so. He was confident that I would return. He was right. Sleepy's wasn't even close (their salesperson brought me to two models outside my price range).
I returned an hour later with my wife, and we tried the two models I liked best. Raja said to her: and quot;I want you to try the same ones he tried, and tell me how they feel. I know how he felt about these models, but I want to hear from you and only you.and quot; Both my wife and I appreciated his insistence on getting her honest feedback. And of course, when she did give honest feedback, she disagreed with both of my selections. We discussed the merits of the two models I had narrowed it down to, and only after it was clear that we couldn't agree on which one wanted, Raja proposed we try a third option, which he warned us was slightly out of our price range. We tried the third option and both loved it. Raja could tell we were hesitant to exceed our budget, and he repeatedly suggested that if we couldn't tell the difference between the more expensive option and the other two, we shouldn't spend the extra money. He let my wife and I discuss in private for a few minutes, and in the end, the more expensive mattress (a Posturepedic Fate) was the right one for us. The mattress, box springs, bed frame, and delivery came to $1295.
