Wayne was great: I contacted him by e-mail on Sunday morning (New Year's Day!) and he replied by the same afternoon. He said that the work would probably take an hour or less and that he usually had a 3-hour minimum (@$75 hour), but he would be happy to come the next day (also a holiday) and do the work -- and charge me for only an hour if that's what it took. Because of the New Year holiday on Monday, parking was no hassle. Having a handyman who is a longtime DC resident is a great advantage. If a handyman has to come in from out of town, he always seems to blame the parking situation (lack of parking!) on you! But a DC resident knows better. Mr. Fisher did the work efficiently and perfectly. We had a nice chat. Great fellow!
Description of Work: I'm putting my DC condo on the market, and I was down to two small jobs -- and there was a sense of urgency to get them done! Two kitchen cabinet doors needed re-hanging and a light switch needed replacing.

Mr. Fisher was efficient, had the tools he needed, did the work well, cleaned up debris from his work, and charged a reasonable fee. I was disappointed about his recommendation for the tub and shower; he concluded that replacement of the existing material would require grinding the grout and caulk and would be too time consuming for end result. I appreciated his honest opinion.
Description of Work: Mr. Fisher, replaced outdoor window box and wisteria vine supports, damaged by winter snow. He also installed a carpet runner on basement staircase. He recommended against recaulking tub and shower. He examined a damaged gutter and water damage to garage roof, and recommended others for the repair.

Excellent. Wayne was extremely responsive from Day 1, and we were able to get a lot of the details taken care of via email. He showed up exactly on time, and the price was exactly what he said it would be. Further, he added a few odd fixes here and there on his own (like adding missing anchors for screws) and gave me advice on how to proceed with other odd jobs, as well as giving me ideas and other references. He was patient and extremely pleasant - it was one of the most hassle-free experiences of my life when dealing with handymen and contractors.
Description of Work: Wayne painted my living room ceiling and crown molding, and the insides of my front and back doors. He also patched a spot below my range hood in the kitchen.

Fisher Homeworks responded that they did not perform that sort of work.
Description of Work: Fisher Homeworks was solicited to prepare an estimate on work that included re-configuring an office suite within a larger historic townhouse used as office space. Although Fisher Homeworks did not perform similar work, Mr. Wayne Fisher responded to my email immediately indicating that his company did not do work of this nature.

The work was for my office. He was right on time and inspected all the work that needed to be done. He did everything that was asked and did it well, with a smile. He wasn't able to wait until the putty on the drywall dried, so he left a piece of sandpaper for me to use later on (my request). I had asked him to repair a set of blinds, but it turned out to be a design problem, not broken blinds. He cleaned up after himself and stayed as out of the way as he could for the other employees.
Description of Work: Wayne patched some small dents in the drywall, drilled holes in desks for wires, moved a bulletin board, repaired a file cabinet, and hauled some glass containers away.

Wayne arrived a little ahead of time, what a concept in this day and age! After showing him the scope of work that needed to be done, he began with the task to replace some tiles that had come off the wall in the shower. He looked at that piece of work and advised me that I would not be happy with the results, because the wall behind the tiles was wet and damaged and likely the tiles would not stay on long. Honesty, yet another great concept! Wayne did an excellent job hanging all the artwork. He was professional, courteous and neat in performing the work.
Description of Work: Hung artwork throughout the house, some independently displayed, one small grouping and one large grouping. Hung towel rack in bathroom. Turned down opportunity to do tile repair.

Mr. Fisher said he had never assembled a trampoline before but was willing to give it a try. He showed up on time and worked diligently and professionally. He was careful in reading the directions and keeping track of the numerous parts. He charged by the hour and the job took 6 hours. I gave him a tip because of the quality of his work and his willingness to work in the hot sun for so long. I will definitely call him for other handyman projects I have.

Wayne returned my call within a day and was able to come out within a week. He was prompt, friendly, thorough, and cleaned up after the work was completed. As mentioned above, it took some time to figure out why the ceiling fixture wouldn't work. He was methodical about narrowing down the problem. He charged $70/hour which was much more reasonable than the other quote I received.
Description of Work: Wayne painted a room, fixed/installed a ceiling light fixture, installed a towel rack, installed a shelf in closet, assembled crib and drilled holes around built-in desk for computer wires. The ceiling fixture took extra time because the dimmer switch that had previously been installed was broken.

Wayne was wonderful. He completed the work much faster than expected and his prices were the best I found. I offered to give him more money than he charged because I was so pleased with his work and he declined, indicating he appreciated the work and wanted to come back.
Description of Work: Wayne repaired a cabinet which had a loose side wall. He not only repaired that, he discovered the entire cabinet had been slipping and was in danger of falling from its mounts. He braced the cabinet at the top and bottom and its very sturdy now. Wayne also did some caulking in the bathroom and put up two shelves which my boyfriend and I hadn't been able to figure out.
Description of Work: Odd jobs, from fixing holes in wall and hanging hooks, ripped out carpeting, fixed sink stoppers, changed window screens, etc.

HE WAS ON TIME AND WAS ACTUALLY VERY PROFESSIONAL. TOLD ME HAD NEVER INSTALLED BALDWIN LOCKS BEFORE, BUT FELT CONFIDENT THAT HE COULD DO IT. HE INSTALLED THE LOCKS AND NONE OF THEM WORK UNLESS THE KEYS ARE IN THE DOOR (WHICH DEFEATS THE WHOLE PURPOSE). HE INSTALLED ONE TOWEL RACK AND BOTH OF THE TOILET PAPER HOLDERS AND DID AN EXCELLENT JOB. HE WAS HERE FROM 8:30 AM TO 3:30 PM AND HAD JUST FINISHED INSTALLING THE LOCKS - HE WAS CHARGING US AN HOURLY RATE AT $75 PER HOUR. STILL HAD TO HANG ANOTHER RACK AND PAINT. I ASKED WHAT HE WAS GOING TO CHARGE US AND HE SAID "THE WHOLE AMOUNT." AT THAT POINT I KNEW ONE OF THE LOCKS DIDN'T WORK. I TOLD HIM WE SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PAY SO HE COULD LEARN AT OUR EXPENSE. SO HE PACKED UP HIS STUFF AND DIDN'T CLEAN UP (WOOD SHAVINGS EVERYWHERE). WE PAID HIM $375 AND HE BILLED US FOR THE DIFFERENCE. ALL HE DID WAS HANG THE TOILET PAPER RACKS AND ONE TOWEL RACKS AND NONE OF THE LOCKS WORK. HE THEN SENT US AN INVOICE (TO ADD INSULT TO INJURY).
Description of Work: HE WAS SUPPOSED TO COME AND INSTALL 3 NEW BALDWIN LOCKS THAT I PROVIDED, HANG TWO TOWEL RACKS, TWO TOILET PAPER HOLDERS, THREE HOOKS, AND PAINT THE CEILING WHERE WE HAD TWO SMALL LEAKS.

Response from FISHER HOMEWORKS
The real issue is - one of the locks is defective and can only be locked from the inside if the key is in the outside of the lock. I offered to replace it at no labor cost at the time. The other two locks operated to the client's satisfaction prior to my leaving. The area was swept clean on completion. The client was billed at $70 an hour agreed to beforehand. When a client tells you that you are not being paid the agreed rate - work stops. To complete all the owner's projects would have taken an additional 2-3 hours.
I can't be happier with the many necessary repairs that were bugging me. Very punctual, very personable, responsive to calls and emails and knows a lot about everything. If there is something that he can't do he will let you know. I plan to use him again when I need something else done.
Description of Work: I had a variety of things to be done: built and installed a banister/railing to the 2nd floor, installed a register in a basement utility door for ventilation, painted a wall, cleaned a sky light, fixed an outdoor light fixture and replaced it with a new one with a motion sensor, built a box to cover a new water valve, removed ceiling light fixtures so they could be washed, repaired several doors so they would close, fix a door so it would lock, put two sliding metal doors on a floor track, bolted a wall size picture to the wall, fixed tricky kitchen light fixtures, showed me how to use the fireplace damper, installed an outdoor water hose mount, moved a heavy piece of furniture and put sliders under it, etc., and evaluated several other things that need to be done. The above project cost included $187 for materials.
