They claimed to have done the job as proposed in contract even though I did not see or hear anyone working on the roof. It was just for preventive maintenance as there was no leak. But soon after, the roof started leaking. When I contacted, they would not response or claimed no knowledge of having a contract for the job until I told them that I planned to take action. They then came twice and each time after the leak got worse. They then claimed the whole roof needed to be replaced. I had to hire another roofer to fix the leak and he told me that my roof was in good condition except for the leak area. Family Roofing finally agreed to make a partial refund of the $1800. It turned out to be another lie: they never did. Hope Angie’s List could root out such bad actors.
Response from Family Roofing
"Family Roofing performed the work per the contract. Afterwards, it was inspected by the solar panel company and passed inspection for the solar panels to be installed. Family Roofing did respond and returned to inspect the roof. We found that the solar panel company screwed bolts into the roof causing the roof leaks."

We had a small leak from our flat roof in DC, and Family Roofing was quick to assess the roof with photo documentation and video. I was able to speak with their foreman, George, who was exceptionally helpful. He explained how our roof was built and the options we had. Ultimately, he recommended flashing the skylight and the protrusions with elastic cement and coating our roof with fibered aluminum coating. On the first sunny day, the crew were on the roof and addressed every single problem. I had an outstanding experience with their entire team. Mary was in regular contact with me and explained the entire process.

Family Roofing did a very good job and solved the problem that we were having with our roof. They installed a new gutter and repaired a chimney as well. I went up and checked the roof the following day and saw the work done myself. I appreciated how thoroughly clean they left the worksite and the other areas around the house.

The gutters are not properly hooked up to the side of the house. It's now seeping down into the basement. This was my original issue in the front of the home. They did repair the front, but now it's moved over to the side. They've installed something that doesn't work, and now want me to pay extra to have them repair the work they were hired to complete. I just want them to get it done.

Our 20 year old roof was leaking and we need a new roof.  We called 3 roofers for estimates on a new rubber roof.  We went with Family Roofing because they came highly referred by a neighbor and they also were very patient with all our questions.  They even followed up after the estimate to see if we had any more questions,  they were the only company we called that did that.  From start to finish the whole process was seamless with Family Roofing.  They cleaned up all of the debris and left the yard spotless.  The new roof is beautiful!

On a Friday night, my roof started to leak in a rain storm.  I called Family Roofing and was surprised when someone answered the phone that late on a Friday night.  They said they would have someone out to look at it first thing in the morning.  The next morning they arrived as promised.  I was impressed that the owner came out on a Saturday.  He looked at my roof, determined the problem  and told me my roof needed repair.  He also pointed out to me that my gutters were rusted through and badly in need of replacement.  He gave me a very fair price to replace the gutters and repair the roof.  He even repaired the roof that same day himself.  On Monday, the foreman and his crew came out and replaced the gutter system.  The entire team at Family Roofing was amazing!   I have already recommended them to friends and family who have hired them and have been just as pleased as I am.

We have a two story DC row house from about 1913 including an attic with dormers (it looks like a third floor, but really only has about a third of the attic that you can stand up in. THe rest is a sloping flat roof. We had leaking around the dormers in our attic which the previous owner had not told us about. The roof over my porch was also beginning to leak as well. I called a roofer that has good reviews on Angie's List but he didn't do Spanish Tile. He sent me to Family and they gave me a reasonable quote and I liked their openness and professionalism. They showed up on time and removed the tiles and inspected the roof. They called to tell me that there was some additional damage that could not be seen from the outside. First that the built in gutter had been installed incorrectly and that water had been splashing up under the roof creating rot. They wanted to install a new gutter and guard. That was fine. They also said there was damage to the wood around the dormers and that the metal in the valleys hat rotted out. I told them it was my understanding that they would cover 'flashing' under the original quote and this was clearly flashing (and also was clearly where the leaks were coming from) so I thought I shouldn't pay extra. They understood about the miscommunication and agreed not to charge extra which I really appreciated. They also wanted to reseal my flat roof which was fine (although I thought a bit pricey given that it was basically just a paint job). When I went up into my attic to see how it was going from the inside, I noticed some significant rot on a major support beam. The site foreman examined it with me and said that he thought it was ok not to replace it given a number of factors which he explained. Again, really appreciated his honesty. They also recovered my porch roof. All in all, a great company. Honest, clean, and competent. Any misgivings I had about a few of the pricing quotes were completely alleviated by their willingness to discuss and recommend against unnecessary work (always a great sign with contractors). I would definitely recommend them.

The job cost more than the initial estimate, but that's because they ended up doing a little bit more work. They did everything they said they would do. They came right out, and they came at the right time and on the right day. We were overall satisfied, though not a hundred percent, because it was a cosmetic restoration. It was a labor saving device which did not have an impact on the quality of the installation. They did do a good job and would have probably come back to redo the work I wasn't satisfied with, if I had insisted. I had got several estimates and their price was in the middle range. I have called them again for another estimate.

Their pricing is a little expensive, I didn't think they had a great attitude towards the work or me. They didn't nail down the side of the roof. I was just not too happy with the overall service.

I gave them a call to ask them a question about 2 jobs that they had done for me, he called me back and left me a very rude message and they told me that they did not want me as a customer. They also pulled a payment from my credit card without my authorization.

After putting down a new rubber roof, I had Family install new gutters. I had requested brown, and they installed white. I called them up, and they volunteered to knock $400 off the price for their mistake if I kept the white, or they would be out the next day to put the brown up.

Went well. I discovered a leak a day after I bought the house, and called Family. They came out right away (not the same day, but quickly) and started the job within a few days of my calling them - a few days later, I had a new roof! When I called with questions on some of the work, they came right out to see what I was talking about. I have since recommended them to friends on several occasions.

The overall experience was a good one. From the day David gave us an estimate, to the team starting early (after we had to cancel on the originally scheduled date), to them finishing the job in 3 days like they said they would, we felt informed, involved, and that we were treated well. They really worked with us, helping us negotiate a price on the tiles, transporting them from a neighbor's driveway to our home, and then exchanging certain surplus tiles for other tiles that we were short on. We've used them before, and would use them again.

Arrived on time, spent the morning doing a very, very poor installation. The contractor failed to use any fascia board as he described in his contract instead nailing the spikes into empty mortar joints providing no attachment. He also strapped the gutter using metal straps and screwed the straps into the tin roof only, not penetrating into any substantial underlayment. The gutter is simply slung off the weak tin roof swinging in the wind. The gutter is approx. 35' feet long and should have had two downspouts, one at each end. Instead, the contractor installed only requiring an unusual slope that exposed the brickwork and required a makeshift deflector sloppily pasted to the building. The downspout is almost 30' and is secured by only one bracket. This was attached to the building using a roofing nail driven into a weak mortar joint and has since fallen out. The downspout was crushed fit into the pipe where it enters the ground. Instead of removing the old cement seal and resealing the spout, the contractor smashed it to fit. The angle of the downspout is off center because the installer didn't take the time to adjust the length of the bend and instead pushed the spout so it fits. When confronted on the poor service for an outrageous price, he commented that the insurance company would probably pay for the repair (Insurance only pays for damage not maintenance). Contractor admitted that he charged an extra $2000 because he had to come in on Saturday for the estimate (even though his website states they are open on Saturday) and that he fit us in on Monday. He claimed my complaint was simply buyer's remorse. On follow up, he refused to accept delivery of a certified letter (which the post office returned to me unopened). He did not acknowledge similar faxed messages with photos. He did not acknowledge email submitted to his web site. He never returned my calls after the initial single phone call where I complained that he took advantage of my desperate wife dealing with flooding, child care and work while I was away at sea. He has created a dangerous situation where the weight of the rain backing up on a poorly supported gutter could fall and hurt someone. There should have been two downspouts as originally setup, the gutter should have been secured adequately and the job should have been neat and professional looking. I would be embarrassed if I did this job and charged any money for it.
Response from Family Roofing
"This job was an emergency job and the work was completed as to ensure that the emergency situation was take care of immediately with a 48 hour turn around from estimate to completion. The work was done as specified in the contract signed by Family Roofing and the wife, the owner of the home. The wife, the party signing the contract, was pleased with the work when it was completed and paid the balance of the contract in full upon completion. The price of the job was based on the scope of the work and the emergency nature of the job. The wife had no problem with the price when we quoted it to her and proceeded to sign the contract and pay for the work as agreed upon. The husband alleges that we spent the morning "doing a very poor installation" however, the husband also states that he was out to sea at the time the work was completed. All of our contact during the actual work was with the wife not the husband as he was out to sea. The wife called for our services, signed the contract, and paid for the job all while the husband was out to sea. We had no contact with the husband until well after the work was completed to the specifics of the contract. The husband has entered this complaint of our work without ever having been there during the time the work was completed, as he clearly states in his complaint."

Owner showed up to give estimate, but did not supervise work crew or look at final result. 5-year labor warranty imperative, and owner does respond quickly to leaks. One of the reasons I went with Family roofing was because of their willingness to work with existing skylights, access panel, and HVAC system and ductwork that presented significant obstacles in the small area. However, they weren't actually able to deal with them well. Initial demolition went fast and they even repaired damaged roof beams and replaced a lot of wood underlayment. The old materials were collected and removed pretty neatly and it seemed like things were going well. I was informed that one piece of ductwork had to be cut out of the roof and was unrecoverable, and would have to be replaced after the new roof was completed. Crew supervisor George showed me the damaged piece. Considering how cold it was, I would have liked to have been contacted prior to their decision to do this, because it would delay reconnecting the heating system and I couldn't have it fabricated until an HVAC guy could get on the roof and look at it. It turns out that it was more than one piece- at least two 90-degree bends and two straight runs were missing when the roof was complete- these connected the HVAC system to the intake inside the house. Though the owner knocked $500 off my final payment after I called and complained, it ultimately cost me about $900 to have the duct manufactured and installed, and was a huge hassle to find someone to do it reasonably on such short notice (it also began snowing as they were completing the roof installation on Friday afternoon, and it was just under 50 degrees in the house by that night- I had to get someone out to fix this over the weekend). My skylights were replaced and "sealed" with black roofing tar. It looked horrible from inside the house but George assured me that was the best thing to do. I ultimately called them back to fix it when the smaller skylight leaked anyway. They did send someone out and he cut the tar off the larger skylight and resealed it properly with clear caulk, but he left black sealant smeared along the edges of the smaller skylight. At least it's sealed now. The roof has since developed a small leak twice in a similar spot, months apart, and they've responded within a day of me calling it in. I've had to repair drywall twice though. Both brother-owners I talked to were courteous and professional, but I found crew leader George's manner a little condescending- I don't want to be called "dear" by the stranger I've hired to work on my property, nor have things explained to me as if I don't know how my house was put together. Everything seems we're watertight now, and a new roof is better than four old ones, but I can't recommend this company- if you get the B-crew like I did, you're in for an ordeal. They're all nice guys, but this was a pretty bad experience- more like a D than C.

David gave me an estimate within three hours of my initial call; the estimate included an Angie's List discount. The next day he dropped off in my mailbox a detailed written estimate, with a brochure explaining the company history, and a DVD explaining the different types of products, options, pluses and minuses. Within 5 days of my initial call, the work was done (this was during the Christmas/New Year's holiday AND when David and his family were facing some family emergency)! All the pieces of material which came off the roof had been picked up- so I did not even realize that the work had been done. David was very clear in his explanations-- kept it to a layman's level, and unlike another company rep did not ask for my husband to be present.

They had a quick response for an estimate. David was very professional and pleasant to work with and more than willing to answer any and all questions. On the job, George and his assistants were equally pleasant and professional and worked hard to complete an excellent job in a timely manner. I would definitely hire them again. October 1, 2011: They helped me with the flooding on my roof. They did the work, and said that it may not be perfect, which I understood. However, I later realized that in the long run, the flooding was actually worse. They essentially ignored my issue. They weren't willing to recognize there was a problem. I had to get an intervention from the BBB, as Family Roofing was not answering my phone calls or plea. I would not recommend them.
