History: I first contracted in July 2012 for 6.5kw of PV panels (25 panels).
2 days later the derecheo hit. The resulting 3 day power outage caused me to rethink my original plan, and I decided I would like to have a battery backup as part of the install. I researched this and discussed it with Kenergy; and a month later they gave me a revised proposal which I agreed to. They promised completion in about 8 weeks.
The first step was to upgrade my main electical panel. And that happened in mid october -- 8 weeks after the contract revision was signed!
Some components (inverters and batteries) were delivered in mid November.
The remaining components (the solar panels) were delivered in mid December.
Note that I had given Kenergy a large downpayment (5/6 or so), so they had cash on hand to order my equipment immediately. I can only speculate why it took 4 months for it to all arrive.
In mid December installation started, and stopped 3/4 done in early January. It then restarted in February, and continued in fits and starts (i.e.; 1 day a week) until March. At that point, the system was mostly working, but not completely (several of the panels were not producing).
The battery backup component was not at all installed. This was partially due to the inadequacy of the battery box (that is partially my fault, since I built one that wasn't code). In early March I ordered a battery box that took 2 months to arrive.
During this 2 month period, Kenergy made no attempt to finalize the installation (such as figure out why the non working PV panels weren't working). When the battery box arrived in early May, I told them (via registered mail, since they are not easy to reach via phone or email) that they had 1 month to complete the installation. I ended up sending several letters, and only got one short and cryptic text message in reply.
Hence, in early June I terminated my relationship with Kenergy. I had to hire another contractor to finish the job (Capital Sun, who are also slow but at least got the system installed and passed MoCo inspection).
Kenergy seemed to be having problems retaining labor, which may partially explain the delays. Or perhaps they were playing some kind of float, and using my payment to finish prior jobs? Of course that is speculation, but I am at a loss to figure out what caused a 2 month job to take 11 months to not quite finish.
I could cut them a bit of slack, as my job was somewhat out of the ordinary (i.e.; the big solar energy installers, like Solar City, were not interested in installing panels on my North facing roof). But it wasn't that weird, and I was paying more than average.
