The finished project came out really well. While I'm sure they would work fine under the guidance of an architect or designer, I can definitely recommend them to anyone who has a largish project and likes the flexibility of waiting to see how things look at each stage before finalizing the next steps.
What I liked best was that they are very conscious of design and when some of the work needed fixing - the gutters needed to be rerouted and a piece of siding was ripped out because the telephone lines attached were a little low and therefore were pulled down by a large truck - they honored their work and made repairs or replaced it.
One of the big decision hurdles we faced was whether to go with design-build, or to hire an architect and contractor separately. If you are facing that choice, we'd say without hesitation: the architect-contractor route is no more stressful, is certainly cheaper, and has some significant advantages over design-build. Barratt worked well with our architect, but they truly were independent - and that meant we got the advantage of both skills, which actually helped us make improvements as the project developed - and as we went through the Arlington permitting process (which can be challenging).
Plus, when I was having trouble with the water pipes freezing, they went into the crawl space and completely insulated it, ending my problem.
They were great.
When accepting bids and vetting contractors, Barratt's attention to detail stood out. During the planning phase of the remodel, they examined our space and noted that the back of the house had been poorly insulated during a previous renovation. They remedied this issue so that our newly located kitchen was properly insulated. During construction, they continued to impress, completing meticulous work. They wrapped our downstairs to contain the dust, leveled our floors when installing the hardwood to eliminate thresholds between rooms, installed beautiful crown molding, worked to give our fridge a built-in look, cleaned up daily and removed trash, and incorporated our feedback throughout the design and construction process.
Additionally, throughout the remodel, they were responsive to emails and calls and took ownership of the inevitable issues that arose during construction. For example, during demolition, they cracked the sink in our old kitchen (which we were not planning on using in the new kitchen). They immediately notified us and carved dollars off of the remodel cost.
We ended up with a livable, beautiful kitchen. We highly recommended Barratt and are choosing to work with them again as we tackle a basement renovation.
