I would not recommend this company to anyone. They took a transom and two sidelights from my door to relead. The two sidelights they returned have hideous craftsmanship and are eyesores that look like I tried to do it myself with the help of a toddler. Their business practices also lack integrity and professionalism. I contacted Daniel several times to request progress pictures but he ignored my request and told me I would see them when he brings them back. When he returned them he said they had a lot of difficulty with the job, this was the first time I heard there was a problem despite checking in. The photos honestly speak for themself. Barely a straight line was made and that was the exact skill needed for this job. I would have appreciated a chance to reevaluate strategy or even stop work if it was beyond his skill set. I went with him because I thought regardless of drama others noted at least there will be a quality job. Daniel was indignant that I was unhappy with his work quality and refused any apology or accountability, just continually repeating over and over that his work is museum worthy and I should just be happy with what I have. Please see reference pictures. When Daniel was at my property he told me he made a mistake with my quote of $3000 and wanted $1400 more. Our signed contract was already in place. This is similar to another review where he asked for more money when on site despite the scope of work not changing. Of course I refused the 50% up charge. He said he would make new molding to go around the stained glass as some snapped when they originally removed them. That did not happen. After they glued everything in and put the damaged molding back they said they were “beat” and leaving. Without fixing the issues to the molding or painting it back to black after asking me to go buy black paint. Their excuse was that it wasn’t in the contract despite them clearly originally setting out to do just that.

We had three historic stained glass mosaics in need of conservation and contacted Daniel Wolkoff of Adams Morgan Stained Glass in November 2019. Daniel sent his assistant to take a look and then gave us an estimate. A lot of effort went into restoring the stain-glass to its original beauty. Transoms had to be carefully removed. Windows were scraped and prepared for the restored mosaics to seat properly. Two assistants arrived in December 2019 to remove first floor mosaics and arrived in January 2020 with high ladders to remove the third mosaic from second story window. Daniel kept us updated during the entire conservation progress, emailing us photos of the intricacies of soaking, removing leading, and re-leading the mosaics. He was able to match color on a missing piece of glass! Daniel did extensive research on our historic windows and sent us the patent info on the company that produced them. We didn't mind the 8 month process because we wanted the windows to look spectacular. And they do!! Daniel's team arrived and installed the three historic conserved mosaics in mid July 2020 and a week later installed arched cut plate glass coverings as security and weather barriers. We are thrilled with the results! Crisp, colorful, bright original mosaics that add special character and shine in their original glory on our house. Daniel is a true artisan, careful in his attention to detail, a lover of mosaic, a storyteller with knowledge of his craft. His company has been in business in the DC metro area for many decades, restoring the beauty of historic properties. If you are flexible and curious, this is the restorer to call.

Mr Daniel Wolkoff was great. I think he knows everything about stained glass! I needed my glass cleaned and he did a perfect job. The piece had 2 small broken pieces which I thought I would have to live with - he suggested that he could replace the pieces and it would look like new. We agreed on a price and now my stained glass is in perfect condition! Very professional service and I learned a lot about stained glass and my piece in the process. A good experience. We are lucky to have Daniel in Washington.

After agreeing with Owner Daniel Wolkoff of Adams Morgan Stained Glass on a quote of $2400 to “remove, dismantle, clean, re-lead, match lead to original, replace cracked glass with best possible match” and “re-solder, re-cement, paint original rebars and reinstall” our historic, stained-glass transom window. After paying a $460 deposit, he removed the window in January 2018. In March 2018, he proposed and we agreed that he would apply gold-leaf numbering to the window for an additional $600. We visited his workshop to see the progress on more than 1 occasion and had been pleased with the quality of his restoration work, despite slow progress. However, as outlined above, we are far less happy about Mr. Wolkoff’s apparent lack of integrity and professionalism. Nearly 18 months later, having paid him a total of $2460, Mr. Wolkoff is now refusing to return our window, demanding that we pay him roughly an additional $1200 in fees, or 50% more, than what we agreed to pay him. In light of our experience, I would urge caution to anyone who is seeking restoration work and is considering contracting Adams Morgan Stained Glass. In efforts to recover our property, we have outreached to DCRA’s Consumer Protection Office for assistance and we remain hopeful that we’ll be able to resolve the impasse.
Response from Adams Morgan Stained Glass
"In 30 years of continual service to DC renovation and antique community, with 100's of clients thrilled with the quality art glass work my studio provides, and close client coordination, there are still a very few who our conscientiousness cannot keep them from harming their own historic houses. Mr. D'Allesandro was going to have mediocre work done to his 1870 antique stained glass door transom. The only way I could keep him from hiring an inferior Baltimore firm, was to provide a matching estimate , as he said "match their price and I will give you the job". I provided an ESTIMATE, but as all antique restoration, with all the factors and problems with damaged and very deteriorated 140 year old stained glass, I could not anticipate every issue ahead of time. Just the removal required two experts and that took 5 hours. The restoration took between 40 and 60 hours of my top end (44 years of experience) work to do IMMACULATELY. but Mr. D'Allesandro was such a badgering and constant drain for additional time, I was forced to increase the final costs. Perfectly legitimate additional charges were necessary when he required that I store his panel for months while he resolved his dispute that he had with his renovator. I even tried to help find him another contractor, but he appreciates nothing. He has acted like a whimpering child throughout this attempt to provide top level restoration work. Now for a few hundred dollars, he is making the entire world suffer. I am tops in my field, and have to be paid properly, I'm sorry if that is not good enough for this immature adult.. The work I did for this whimpering child with virtually no appreciation at all, is literally the finest available in the United States and ready for my expert installation."

We had some work done by this company many years ago, and knew of his quality workmanship. When we decided to have this large stained glass window repaired, he was the only one we considered. Daniel managed to find some ripple glass that provided a very good match. He replaced the perimeter lead with zinc U-channel and reframed the entire window so that it will wirhstand many more years in its outside location. He offered several options for framing, and helped us decide on the best for our use.

Daniels' prices are not the lowest, but are very fair for his quality of work. He takes his time to do the work, but since we were in no hurry, this was not an issue for us. He is a true artist/craftsman, and we can recommend him without reservation.

From the first phone call, when I explained our situation, the owner Daniel Wolkoff was a wealth of information about the features of our skylight, the recommended ways to approach its restoration, and helpful in scheduling the work in a timely manner. We were lucky as we live not far from his workshop, and so he made a house call, during which he not only explained the ins and outs of the skylight, but of all sorts of features of our 1908 rowhouse - with plenty of helpful advice and tips for future restoration ideas. He is clearly committed to helping homeowners who want to conserve, preserve, or restore elements of old houses to their original, or close-to-original character. The work was done on time and of high quality. The skylight window looks great!! Would highly recommend Adam's Morgan Stained Glass.
