i have been bringing my 2002 Nissan Exterra to 10th Street Auto for several years and there is no comparison. Every time i go in, they are upfront about the work, professional, and do a quality job. i have never been charged for extra work like most other places you go for oil changes, etc.

I am a single woman and don’t know very much about cars. It’s so difficult to find an honest, reliable mechanic that can handle almost any repair. I could not afford a new car, so I bought a used car. I had 10th Street Auto give the car a complete “physical”. Kevin (the owner) gave a very detailed list of what needed to be done. He was straight forward and completely honest. My car needed everything from an air conditioner to new tires and rotors and more. Every mechanic who worked on my car did an excellent job! All repairs and workmanship was high quality and each repair was explained in detail. Kevin was very patient with my questions and very knowledgeable about cars. I will always use 10th Street Auto for every car maintenance in the future! Finally, an honest, reliable repair shop!!!

Good job, good price. Car was coming to the States after 3 years overseas and needed a good service. Was worried about a mechanic that would tell me all kind of things were wrong with car but they were honest about what needed replacing now vs later and the condition of the car.

When I met with Kevin the first day I brought my car in, he was very upfront and honest. Because of the age of my car and the condition of my car (yes, it was a rough looking car), the job could run upwards towards $2,000. He did give me a little time to think about it because the car isn't worth that much. But because the car was very sentimental to me, he said he would take a look and see how bad it really was. Well, it was bad. Burnt clutch, stretched cable, and everything else that could be wrong with a clutch. I had him go ahead with the work anyway. Some special parts had to be ordered, so he had to keep the car a few days. When it was back together, they noticed that things were not quite right with the clutch. After looking further, they found that there was a rod that was needed. If I didn't get the rod replaced, I would have burned out my clutch again. Some car repair places would just have done the clutch and let it go at that. Kevin is very good at keeping the customer informed of every detail.
The quality of the work and the fact that they want to make sure everything is working perfectly before the customer gets it back was excellent. This was my first time using them and when I need additional service, I will go back to them. They are honest and they keep in touch with the customer. They won't do any work unless the customer gives the OK. They are great!!!

They are easy to communicate and they do a great job on repairs; for the cost, they will let you know immediately if there are any changes and they meet their deadline at all times. They are not a budget repair place, they charge a fair amount but it's not cheap.

They did what they said they would do when they would do it.My only complaint is that even though they had my cell phone number and new that I was waiting at a nearby establishment for the work, during both the estimate and the repair, I did not learn that the work was done until I called them.

Tom and Mike handle every job personally and professionally. They give you an honest estimate of what might be wrong and how long it might take to fix, and never NEVER pile on services you don't need. They also stand behind their work - most recently when the windshield wipers they installed snapped off in an ice storm, they ordered the parts and fixed them for free in one day!

I had a problem with my 2002 Chevy Cavalier that I had happen once before, and the last time this problem happened (broken air conditioner and broken daytime running lights--a wiring problem), I took it to another area mechanic, and the problem wasn't fixed. Then, I took it to a dealer, who charged me $300 to "find" the issue and then said they "thought" they could fix it for over $2k.I finally took the car out of state to be fixed, so that my more auto-intelligent dad and brother could handle it. I paid $1,100, and this was several years ago. When the problem happened again this year, I debated what to do, but figured I'd give 10th Street Auto a try, after seeing the reviews on Angie's List and another site. They were able to schedule me in right away and were friendly and professional from the start. I appreciated that they took the time, once diagnosing the issue, to talk through the steps in fixing it with me. I was confident that they weren't taking me for a ride, something that I often feel as a woman when talking to mechanics. They were able to fix the problems in one day, and I had air conditioning again, which I was incredibly grateful for in 90 degree summer heat! The total including tax was $1,300, which I felt was fair and justified. All in all, I will use them for all my repairs from now on and will recommend them to friends.

After living in DC for three years, I have finally found the perfect car mechanic. I was having problems with the high beams/low beams on my Jeep Cherokee. I phoned on Monday and they fit me in on Wednesday. Having done some research already, I had a good idea what the problem was, as well as what it probably would cost. Mark called me in the early afternoon and gave me a detailed description of what they checked, what they thought the problem was, and how much it would cost to fix it. Everything was exactly what I thought it might be, except the cost, which ended up being lower than I anticipated! I picked the car up later that afternoon and am completely happy with their work.

Originally I had the problem diagnosed at another shop (not associated with 10th Street Auto Repair) that claimed to specialize on Volvo's. While they did find the problem, they seemed more interested in selling new parts and not offering options such as refurbished parts that would save several hundred dollars. I then found 10th Street Auto Repair who quickly repaired the problem (within the time frame promised) and at my request used refurbished parts. I was also impressed that after I dropped off the car, they tactfully asked me if an interior trim piece had been broken prior to me bringing in the car. While it was me who broken it, many shops would just flat out insist that it wasn't them. I have confidence in them and will definitely use their services again.

For the dealership check, I took the car to 10th St. Auto with my questions. They not only confirmed I didn't need that additional work done, they fixed a problem the dealership had miss-diagnosed in the first place. The dealership said my oil pan was leaking. In fact it was a hose coupling higher up in the transmission. Unfortunately the dealerships miss-diagnosis is a common mistake, but that only furthered my happiness with 10th St. Auto for doing a more complete investigation of the leak.

My car died in early May. I called ahead (they work by appointment only), and I had my car towed to their store. They are very professional. After numerous tests, it turns out my battery was dead. I had my battery replaced in November 2008 by Jack Taylor's in Alexandira. 10th Street Auto was about $150 cheper than Jack Taylor's. Great small business and local store.

My car died on a Sunday night when I was in Hershey, PA, about to come back to DC. I couldn't jump it, and it was clearly the alternator. So I had it towed all the way back to Capitol Hill (auto service company covered the first 100 miles, which made it worthwhile to bring it back rather than stay in a hotel there, have it done in a local garage, and miss a day of work.) I checked Angie's List before having it towed, found that 10th Street Auto was the closest place to my house, and had it towed directly there. The next morning, I took the train to work, and they replaced the alternator that day. They were friendly and professional. They charged about $340. I don't know what I could get it done for other places, but this seems pretty reasonable. Any independent mechanic is a wild card, and of course, going to a dealership for service is like a prison initiation - every time. I drove the car to work the next two days in a row after that, and it seemed fine. Then the evening of that second day, it died again in the same way on the way to the grocery store, luckily, I was about a mile from 10th Street Auto and had another tow covered by an auto service company. The next morning, they told me that the alternator they got from Subaru must have been defective. They said they used a factory refurbished alternator, otherwise it would have cost 3 times as much. So they put another one in, and there was no charge. In spite of that second tow, the experience was good overall. Their explanation seemed plausible, and they didn't try to charge me for anything on the second visit. Over the past 2 years, just about everything has gone out on my Subaru. I know they have a great reputation, but it seems like at about 7 years/100,000, mine became a lemon. So there could well have been factors at play that the garage couldn't have accounted for.

The air conditioning system in my 1995 Honda Civic was not working properly. They found a leaking hose, replaced it, and recharged the system.
