The job went very smoothly -- each day two men appeared (a different pair each day) to perform that day's task: sanding and staining on Day One, then buffing and applying polyurethane on Days Two, Three and Four. They showed up on time, worked efficiently and left. After the work was done, we had to wait an additional 48 hours for the floor to dry fully. The first crew helped us move a few heavy items, and sealed off items we couldn't relocate with plastic wrap and tape (to protect them from sawdust). The finished result looks gorgeous. It's too early yet to tell how it will last, but so far we're delighted.
Things went downhill from there.
Scheduling the work was a nightmare. We had several start / stop failed attempts to arrange for the crew to come out. Mrs. Hegland was beyond obnoxious on the phone. Not simply unhelpful, but downright rude.
During the job the crew cut through a water pipe causing water damage in basement. They did arrange for a plumber to make the needed repairs, but only after Owner yelled at my wife and later at me for not telling him where the water pipes would be.
In the middle of the job Mr. Hegland demanded he be paid more to complete the work because of the difficulty in matching the stain and alignment of the new flooring to the existing, and in cutting in a clean transition line along the existing flooring in the adjacent rooms. At one point his crew simply left, and it took a number of lengthy phone calls with both Heglands to get a crew back out to finish the job. Both Mr and Mrs Heglands' demeanor in this was consistent with all of our interactions after the initial visit - rude, aggressive and condescending.
We ultimately ended up with a complete job, and the flooring itself (including the finish - stain does match adjacent rooms) does look nice and has held up well. The process itself was torture. Life is too short to put up with the Heglands, I'd use a different flooring contractor if I ever needed floor work done again.
John came right away to measure the house. They gave me a price/sq ft over the phone which made easy to compare to other guys (he was the cheapest). After the measurements he gave the cost not one and quot;extraand quot; or anything. It was very clear from the beginning.
Understanding that we are time constrained, they offered two crews for sanding so that they can finish all house in one day. (you still need the days for the stain and coating to dry..).
Last, but not least, the job that they did was SO meticulous, reaching under heaters, under all the corners in all the closets... Really now after some major renovations, I appreciate their work even more, considering the pain that I am going through with sloppy contractors.
