- Very good value price for a 20kw Generac, piped into home gas line (I found lower cost as well as more expensive, but David’s one-stop shopping was the best value overall).
- David is a “soup to nuts” generator contractor providing all electrical components, gas hook-up, core drilling, etc. (he provides good advice as well)
- He and all of his employees were very polite and consummate professionals
- They were all very respectful of our home and left everything clean and neat
- They were quick but very thorough – completed full job including, delivery, placement on pad, gas hook up, transfer switch, moving circuits into panel, testing, etc. in 1and frac12; days (mostly outside and without imposing; important for someone who works from home)
- After everything was tested and put back together, I found that the generator could handle even more load. I asked David to add 2 more circuits – without even a smirk he said, “no problem, but, I do want to re-start and re-test the system all over with the added circuits”, this meant easily another half hour. So, great marks for “ease of doing business with” and for concern over safety and “doing the right thing”.
- I forgot that my outside panel was originally set up for a double panel inside, hence, they would not have to run as much wire into the home and take a little less time with panels, etc. (but that was 6 years ago and I forgot). To me, a deal is a deal and I agreed to pay David the contract amount and already wrote out the check. David mentioned to me that it was less costly than he anticipated and offered me the first year’s maintenance for free – it was the right thing to do and I’m glad he did it.
What I dislike: - Nothing – I truly can’t think of anything at this time. But, I’ll append this review in a year after the first maintenance, and the inevitable power outage that comes with these new weather patterns. From what I’ve experienced so far, I envision maintenance will be more of the same. Hence, I’m confident I will be referring Kay Electric to my neighbors and friends.
In addition to the above comments: Originally, I bought a portable generator from Cannondale in Wilton after 6 days without power (I have a well, so I lose water as well). Of course, the power came back on the next morning. I never used the portable and immediately called Canondale, but they were adamant - no return of any kind. What stunned me was that I offered to trade-up for the much larger Generac that I have now (at substantially higher cost with repeat maintenance) and they simply said “no”. It was all very professional, just “no”. I was not impressed and cannot find any intelligence in this attitude, and from lessons of the past, I prefer to deal with companies that do smart business, as they tend to stay in business longer. When I contacted David Kay, he came to look at both my job and the unused generator and he took it on trade as part of our deal. That was an intelligent business move making me feel that they are likely to remain in business for an additional 21 years. Overall, Kay was almost 20% lower priced than Canondale.
I originally did the deal with David a couple of weeks after Irene. I then went to Florida for several weeks and did not want to take delivery until I returned. Of course the next outage hit with hundreds of thousands out of electricity in CT. I called David concerned that he may have taken advantage of the situation and given away my generator - he did not. He was taken aback when I asked if my generator was still in his shop. He said that since I paid for most of the generator with my deposit, it came in with the serial number assigned to my account and it would be ready when I returned for install (a week from the latest weather disaster). It was installed on the exact agreed upon date in a very timely manner.
Also, I found that his main assistant, Jude (as in Hey Jude – and yes, he’s heard it before), was a consummate professional; knowledgeable with great customer facing skills. He answered all my questions thoroughly, even the “dugh!” ones. His work was perfectly neat and orderly and spot on including trouble shooting through transfer switch issues. I tried to tip him because I felt that he was extraordinarily professional but he adamantly refused to accept it. When I find a business where all the employees are similarly professional and easy to deal with, it becomes a reflection of the entire company and ownership in general. This one shines very nicely thanks to David. TF
