Upon meeting Mr. Mark DeVito (the owner) and seeing the repair shop I knew in minutes that I had found the right place. Mark carefully unpacked the sculpture and determined the repair was possible and quoted me a very fair price. He is a true craftsman and is a collector of many things so he has a deep appreciation of art, antiques, and history. His shop was exactly what I expected; filled with old tools and many pieces of furniture in various states of repair.
Several weeks later I picked up the repaired sculpture and it was flawlessly repaired. Mark even sent photos before I picked it up showing how he had carefully clamped and did the work. After it was repaired he sent more photos too!
Mark is a true craftsman and gentleman of the highest order. His quiet manner and expert knowledge of his craft is a treasure. He performs true restoration and repair of fine old things in the tradition of the old masters of furniture I believe. I have the highest regard for the services he offers and am so happy to have found him to repair my item. I now consider him a friend and fellow collector.
"Hello [removed member name], It's been a while since Iv checked my reviews, especially since May when we started to relocate my business. Sorry to hear We did not pick-up on your emails, it's not like me to not respond to an inquire. I was wondering if you had been using my new email of [email protected] and not my old email of [email protected]. I'm sue you had your pieces taken care of by now and sorry we were unable to get back to you. Mark DeVito"
My very last experience with Mark at Raphael's was at least a year ago and related to the repair of the bed rails for one of a pair of vintage beds. The rails had cracked at the juncture of the head board to the rail. I took it to Mark who patched the wood, reattached the locking mechanism and added aditional brackets to distibute the weight more evenly.
I moved recently (about 20 miles away) and one of the rails on the other bed cracked! I asked my new neighbors for recommendations for furniture repair. I was given a new name by several people; called him, received an estimate (which was much less than Mark's), gave him the rail and waited for it's return. It was returned as promised and reattached to the bed. The gentleman had just glued the wood pieces back together, but did nothing about the weight distribution..
Four months later, the rail broke again in the exact same spot....in the middle of the night with a guest on the bed asleep!
I guess this is a and quot;you get what you pay forand quot; moment.
I have learned from this experience that Raphael's is the only place to go for repairs on anything that is important to you because the work will be done properly. Mark knows exactly what he is doing; he is a professional and very knowledgable about the antique and fine furniture world.
