Mr Green required a 50% down payment when placing the order saying that he had to pay for the material immediately which I questioned.
When the old windows/door had been taken out he came up with 2 substantial change orders(replacement of siding boards and trim). The last one on a cold Saturday evening requesting a check of $ 1300 before continuing work( 50% of the change order for the additional siding work). My wife gave in considering how much we had paid already and she could not stand the provisional status any longer. Mr. Green also argued that we would not get a warranty if we installed the windows/door without the change order work which I firmly doubted.
I had to ask for the warranty after he had left what he regarded as job done. What I received was a service request form from interstate with inadequate information on it. Therefore I contacted the supplier and the Interstate Windows customer service department promised to send me the correct documentation and a copy of the order.
We also had an argument about the inferior quality of the carpentry and paint work. Upon my request only and with resistance('my work is matching the overall style of your house') he used wood putty to cover nails which had been driven too far into the boards and to fill gaps where he had used 2 boards instead the original 1 from deck to roof. He stained the composite windows himself. Lacquer was left on the windows and where the interior frame had accidentally been painted with the beige exterior color and the staining did not cover it he just said the wood did not absorb the paint.
We still have cold air coming in underneath the sliding door. Mr. Green inspected 3 days ago and said that caulking is required. I would call it inadequate installation technique.
Overall the final costs of the project exceeded the proposal by 50%. When I asked for a final invoice with detailed items he declined and said the proposal/change orders/checks would be good enough for the accountant. Looks to me like a method: come in on the higher side of the estimates with a quality message and make the real money when the project is underway and the customer has paid and difficulties to get out. The colder it is the better this method works.
When I pointed out that I will write a project review on Angie's list he said that this is the first time he hears about the List thus indicating that he was registered without his knowledge.
Very disappointing workmanship when you bear in mind that he participated in the work all the time. ( He also had convinced my wife in my absence to accept the door, although it opens/slides to the wrong side vs. the door that was replaced).
