"Would you please give me the name of the arborist who worked with you? I do not have your name or address in our data base."
Hurricane Sandy came and the maple split right down the middle to the root; the cabling kept the disconnected half from falling, so after the storm the tree stood oddly poised with one vertical half rooted and the other attached via the cables at the crown, yet severed from the ground (I'd never seen anything quite like it). I called Doug within ten minutes of the tree splitting, and was early (if not first) on his list for cleanup, in part because I'd called so soon. I was disappointed that the tightening and adding of cables didn't save the tree, especially since I'd spent nearly $1000 on that tree's care only three weeks earlier; and I wondered, too, if the reinforcement had actually compromised the "give" of the tree in high winds. I"m sure Bartlett could convincingly argue that Sandy was just too great a force and that, if anything, the added and tightened cables prevented the tree from falling into my driveway or onto the street (though, ironically, the fact that it didn't fall meant insurance would not cover any of the cleanup). But I was disappointed that, given my having spent so much only three weeks before it fell, the company would not give me any break on price for cleanup -- even if that only meant waving the 10% "emergency surcharge." Furthermore, this year I have new dead branches on the walnut and the birch is still shedding leaves (though, as I said, I was warned about that recurring).
Let me put it this way: people like Doug are arguably the best in the business. But Bartlett is a very large company, and Doug doesn't set the company's policies or pricing, the company does. Furthermore, as with all large gardening companies, Doug supervises work but is not present for many of the procedures (how could he be, with so many clients to service?) I would say that, considering it is among the most expensive tree maintenance companies in this area (Fairfield County), Bartlett is best suited to the very wealthy. For a middle- or upper middle-class homeowner, it probably makes more sense to deal with a smaller (but reputable) arborist who will have a less corporate relationship with the client.
