I'm rather obsessed with detail on jobs like this, and frankly I'm sure that (regrettably) I can be irritating to contractors due to that trait of mine. Perhaps worse still for Mike and his crew, I was often home while the work was being done, and had the opportunity to see how it was progressing step by step. I'd go outside several times a day both to check on things and enjoy the progress, and little comments I might make were always greeted with interest and respect -- never defensiveness.
Several times when I made a suggestion as to how to deal with a challenge Mike would come up with an alternative that was not only better, but undoubtedly harder for him to accomplish. Perhaps you can understand how little experiences like that add up to trust and respect.
I'll end this grand endorsement of mine with an anecdote that happened early in the job which set the pleasant tone for the rest of my experience. The crew was eating lunch outside around the work area when I decided to go out and look things over. I felt a bit awkward about them seeing me walking around checking things out right in front of them, but nevertheless I felt it was important to me to do so. I was hoping to be rather discrete in my "inspection" and let them enjoy their lunch, but after I looked things over for a few minutes Mike took the trouble to come over to me and seek out my comments. Surprising to me, he actually wanted to hear what I thought rather than simply hoping I'd soon go away. I expressed some surprise to him about this. His comment was simply, "We want you to be happy."
The job is finished now. I'm happy.
