I was on the market for a supplier who can provide both heating oil and propane. Mike, the owner of the company, went over to my property and inspected both oil and propane tanks. Below is a chronicle of what happened next:
Aug.28: met with Mike; he pointed out problems with my propane tank (too close to generator; pipe not up to standard) but offered free installation of propane tank anyway. His price (particular oil) was not the cheapest, but overall package was competitive. So I signed contract for oil and also prepaid 800 gallons.
Mike promised he would come next day to install propane tank
Aug. 29 (Friday): no show; I called and Mike agreed to come on Monday instead.
Aug. 31 (Monday): Mike did show up; my father-in-law was cooking so he asked for 5 minutes. Unfortunately there was a misunderstanding because of my in-laws poor english. So Mike just left. no email, no call. I called again. This time Mike promised to come Sep 8th.
Sep 8th: no show; no email; no call
Sep 10th: I sent him an inquiry email. He replied suggesting me to "stay with the current propane supplier" because of the two issues he pointed out to me first time we met! After I reminded him that fact and a couple of email exchanges, he switched to state that he could not install the tank because there was a bush in the way. He agreed to install the tank if I removed the bush.
Sep 13th: I contacted Mike again after removing the bush. He promised he office would call me the following day.
Sep 14th: of course no one contacted me. I sent him another reminder on the 16th. no response.
Sep. 17th: I called his office. Was able to talk to Stacey. She explained Mike wanted $300 dollars to install the tank! The reason is again the exact two problems that he pointed out much earlier !!! After I explained what had happened, Stacey (after talking with Mike) changed the story and stated that Mike didn't realize initially that the underground line was not up to standard either.
Sep 18-22th: lots of calls between me and Stacey (who is patient and polite). We couldn't reach agreement on the $300 additional installation charge. So I requested a refund of prebuyed oil but was refused.
Review on the AC work (this was done on Sep 8th before I knew better):
old AC stopped working (no air blowing). A technician came (he was on time) and told me I needed to change the fan motor. He demanded $1000 to fix the problem (a generic motor $800 and $200 labor). A quick google revealed most generic motor costs less than $300. So I declined and paid $165 for diagnostic.
Used another vendor later to fix the AC; paid $500 for the same work + cleaning of the fan.
"This review is all because I would not perform free work for this customer. We promised to deliver and install a propane tank at her house and when we arrived her father was cooking and told us to leave. He could not speak English and did not tell us to wait. I found an underground gas line that is used in the indoor part of you home and pointed it out to the customer and told her that to install a new line is $300 she refused to pay. She told me I should do the work for free. After talking to the customer and hearing she did not want to pay for the tank to be moved with in code and the under ground gas line to be installed correctly I told her it would be wise to stay with her company that installed her tank in such a way that will cause property damage. The reason for this review is I told her that I would not work for free because she is a new customer. I'm sorry but we need to be paid for our work. The air conditon repair was a bad blower motor and a air handler full of mold completly full of mold. We told her it wise to replace the air handler because of the growth of mold in the air handler and duct system. We are trying to advise her on safety issues and she rather go the cheaper way with a band aide. I am glad that we did not replace her propane tank because the tank is too close to the generator and the underground line will eventually brake and cause a gas leak. I reported these issues to her and she expected me to repair them for free. Here is a copy of my email I thinks it’s best to stay with your current propane company, The reason I am saying this is the tank is too close to the generator and we would need to cut down the tree to move it and the gas line going to the propane tank is not up to mechanical code and if we put our tank there we will assume liability. If you want these problems fixed I can give you a price to do so."
"IT WAS MY PLEASURE PERFORMING THE WORK FOR YOU. THANKS FOR YOUR CONTINUED BUSINESS."
