In January of 2014, I discovered that the heat pump wasn't working. The "auxiliary heat" indicator on my thermostat was constantly showing, so I checked the outdoor heat pump, and found that it wasn't turning on at all. I phoned South Shore and explained my situation to Doug Nadeau. He told me that he "no longer works on heat pumps." I then phoned another local HVAC contractor and scheduled an appointment to diagnose my heat pump's problem. Before the appointment, I checked with the manufacturer of my heat pump (Frigidaire/Nordyne) and I learned that its warranty had never been registered. Then I learned that the warranty registration must be completed within 60 days of a product's installation, and that failing to do so would decrease the warranty period from 10 years to 5 years.
I got my current problem with the heat pump resolved, but South Shore Heating & Cooling's failure to register the warranty on my heat pump back in 2010 means that my unit will only be covered under warranty until July 2015 -- instead of July 2020. The 10-year warranty on my heat pump was one of the deciding factors in my purchase of this particular make and model.
