Overall, I would not consider this contractor in the future.
Description of Work: I inquire about John Magnus Remodeling services to install kitchen cabinets and an island. It was obvious that Mr. Magnus was not interested in performing the job, which is an acceptable response due to the complexity of the project. Without sufficient inquiries from Mr. Magnus about the project, I was given a quote that was far in excess of what this project required. I cannot speak to Mr. Magnus quality of work. But my first impressions are not positive.

Response from John Mangus Remodeling
I enjoyed meeting with this client and was glad that he was making use of Angie's List and also contacting people in his local area. The project would have involved removing the existing cabinetry in his kitchen then replacing those cabinets with some others that had been pulled from another house in another town and were stored in the garage. While the cabinets in the garage were in acceptable condition they would not have offered the use and facility that the existing cabinets did. The client mentioned that he was asking 5 contractors to give prices for the work he hoped to have done. I explained that the work to install a series of cabinets that had not been designed or intended for his kitchen could be an expensive task and that one of the other folks he was expecting might suit the style of his project better and consequently be closer to any desired price point he hoped for. However no actual quote was ever offered to the client. We spoke only in general terms about the potential expense/cost As for the client himself, as I said earlier, I enjoyed meeting him and believe it would have been fun to work with him. I'm sorry it didn't work out but I hope that someone else from Angie's List will end up with the project Thank You

We've used John a couple times in the past. Once in our old house, our ceiling collapsed, and some friends from the neighborhood recommended him. John did some emergency repair work before taking time to diagnose the problem and do a permanent excellent repair job. The other time was with our new house, where he did lots of updating bathrooms, patching ceilings, and other work. Our experience this time was very satisfactory, as always. John is extremely meticulous, and very exacting in his work. He never leaves a mess, and puts things back the way they were. For most plumbing, tile, and electrical work, John subcontracts out work to people he's known for years. The result is just what we've envisioned - we have a great working space in our laundry room. As part of the bargain, I got great advice from John on various home improvement projects, and as always, his invaluable words of wisdom on life in general. If you have any issues with the work, John will return your call within several hours, and will stand behind his job. If we had other work to do in this house (built 1915) I'd not hesitate to use John again. He's very experienced in a wide variety of repair jobs, and he's seen it all. You won't regret asking him to take a look at your situation.
Description of Work: We redid our laundry room to make a sort of food preparation area. Work involved removing an old sink, scraping stone walls, applying dry-lock in a couple coats onto the walls. Then to level the floor, John used a combination of cement and plywood, so that new cabinets could be installed. He had a plumber subcontracted to remove lots of old pipes and then install the sink, and he had a counter guy subcontracted to install the counter. John also patched our bedroom ceiling where the winter rains had collapsed the plaster. He constructed a tent out of plastic sheeting and applied several coats of stuff and then painted.

These leaking windows on the second floor dripped water into our basement as well as our kitchen where the water ran out of lighting fixtures in the ceiling. John did a tidy and meticulous job removing the top parts of the windows which were rotting, installing drip caps underneath the house shingles as well as flashing, and replacing parts of the frames around the windows, as well as caulking entire windows. I strongly recommend John Mangus for his expertise, his care, and his sense of humor.

Overall it went extremely well. We have always been very please with Mr. Mangus' work. He has done quite a bit of work on our home over the years and gives us excellent advice as well as top quality workmanship. On this most recent job he was very timely, organized, pleasant to deal with, and left us with beautifully crafted new ceilings. He is careful in his work and leaves things as he found them. He is very trustsworthy.
