At the end of the winter Mr. Riquier decided that either I did not have enough baseboard to adequately heat my home and/or my heating pipes were not configured properly. I have lived here for 35+ years and never had inadequate heat before. In April he wrote up a quote for $1950.00 to "Re-Pipe Main Heating Zone." Luckily I didn't waste another $2000. The day before this job was to proceed I heard of another contractor who understands the electronics of the newer, more high-technology boilers. In one hour he had reconnected the outdoor sensor, reprogrammed my boiler, and the heat was blasting through my house. When I thanked him profusely, he looked at me in disgust and said, "All they had to do was read your manual."
I have no doubt that the Riquier company can provide adequate plumbing services but I would not trust them to install or maintain any of the new heating and air conditioning systems that require basic knowledge of electronics. There they are sadly lacking and in my case they were not willing to admit it.
"The main problem with the [Member Name Removed] job is the house itself. The homeowner has a tendency to hire handymen or boyfriends to do her work. The piping in the walls and baseboard do not form a loop. They have been tied onto and teed off with no type of common sense. Adding to that, the loops are too long and have inadequate heating elements. Add an external temperature sensor and the normally 180degree water in the boiler might be 90degrees on a 50degree day. If the piping and baseboard are not proper, the house will not heat. Running a space heater in front of the thermostat does not help either. We programmed all 125 parameters for the boiler. We had an engineer from Triangle Tube check the boiler. The boiler and the install were perfect! The problem was the hack work done by her friends. The main heating zone is the worst part. A maximum loop length is 75ft. This loop is over 200ft long and goes through an unheated crawl space. We offered to re-pipe the main loop and add the correct amount of baseboard for a very discounted rate that Spring to correct the problem that we didn't cause. All while her latest friend remodeled her bathroom and removed her baseboard because she wanted a bigger vanity. The heat suddenly worked great, it was Spring! This customer is a wonderful, elderly lady. She does not fully grasp the new technology as well as she thinks she does and that's okay. She sold the home to someone else shortly after and now it's someone else's mess. Our sticker is proudly on the boiler and I'm sure it's still running fine but without correcting the problems, it will not heat the house properly. Allen Riquier - Owner"
10 days later, 6/24/2013 time for 2nd service call. TWO men came to the house at the time specified. This was to replace the supply valve behind the refrigerator. This work ended up costing $174 for TWO men with the cost of the valve at $24. Clearly this was a ONE man job, 2 people couldn't fit behind the refrigerator. The real irony is, it appeared that this repair person REPLACED THE SAME six inch piece of copper pipe with plastic that supposedly the first person @$100. had previously fixed. In summery while we are pleased to have this small leak repaired the costs seem excessive for such a small job especially with us buying the filter. And the short time required for the repair in each case we would have expected a cost of $150. for materials and labor, not a total of $274.00
As you can tell we are disappointed, we sent them a letter telling them of our disappointment, with no response. As things stand now we would be highly reluctant to use their services again or recommend them to any others.
Very professional. Kept us in constant phone contact and always returned our phone calls. Always cleaned up after themselves, even vacuuming after every job.
We had a problem with our rebate from the State of CT and they took it overand got our rebate.
Would highly recommend.
"Ouch. While we at R.J. Riquier strive for customer satisfaction at all costs, we cannot help everyone. We do not own every problem existing in a property, just because we show up. Two young lawyers fresh out of law school. Need we say more."
