"I would like to respond to Member's comments and criticisms. I saw Jackie as he described. However, what was not mentioned was that Jackie didn't have signs typical of Lyme's Disease. She had generalized swelling of the entire front limb. Lyme's Disease usually presents with swollen joints only. Swollen limbs can be a symptom of several more serious diseases (and this was explained at the time of the exam). Based on the age of the patient and the atypical symptoms, radiographs (x-ray) and blood-work were recommended to ensure that the more serious conditions were not present. The owner was not required to do any of these items and accepted the diagnostics. The owner may assume it is okay for us to do the absolute least possible to get at the problem. But as a licensed professional veterinarian, it would be bad practice to not advise my client of the other possibilities present. Lyme is not easy to diagnose and is a disease of ruling out the other problems. Lastly, while we certainly appreciate the owner's retrospective feedback; we would prefer he not assume that as the treatment for Lyme's Disease was successful, that we could or should have skipped the rest of the proper and appropriate diagnostic workup. I would argue that any veterinarian that would have just simply treated for Lyme's Disease based on this patients age and presented symptoms, would NOT be offering the best medical care and could have potentially missed a life-threatening condition. I am glad that the patient responded to the treatment as she is sweet and a lovely dog."
