We bought the house on a short sale, after it had been empty for nearly 2 years. While empty, the house was vandalized for copper piping from the basement; and many water pipes had burst during the winter. We had to negotiate a construction loan from the bank, in addition to the mortgage, to bring the house up to code so the mortgage could be approved. The loan approval was contingent on bank approval of the estimates for the work. I can't say enough good things about the quality of Charlie's work. In the kitchen, every cabinet and drawer in the kitchen is level, the splashguards are flush to the walls. We had to cope with a chimney that runs up between kitchen and dining room; Charlie put a spice cabinet over the chimney and then shimmed the cabinets on either side of the chimney so that their fronts are even all the way across. The completion of the upstairs was dependent of plumbing and electrical work done by other contractors, but Charlie was on the spot when they were working and even "worked around" some incomplete items at times. A few times, he even came in the evening after supper to do some finish work, like putting handles on the cabinets and leveling the doors and drawers. In the course of the projects, Charlie noticed numerous small things that were broken or damaged, such as crown molding or improperly-mounted electrical sockets, and simply fixed them. He dropped a new socket in the laundry room because there wasn't one in the right place. Overall, he just takes a very personal interest in the project as a whole. He truly has a craftsman's view of his work. "Doing it right" has been his motto throughout this work. After I primed the kitchen walls, prior to installing the cabinets, he chewed me out for getting paint splatters on the subfloor, which he said would ruin the floor when it was put down. Then when I came back to paint, I found that he had completed covered the subfloor with cardboard, as insurance against my maniacal painting ways. Based on my experience, CMA Carpentry is the go-to ninja master for any general remodel. We had a terrible experience in our previous house, where much of the same types of work was done shoddily by a different contractor. That just makes this experience seem that much better.
Description of Work: We asked Charlie Alegi for a detailed estimate of costs for doing a variety of remodelling projects in our newly-purchased house, which originally was built in 1896 and converted into a 2-family residence in the 1940s. Projects included completing a partial stairway into the attic, and enclosing the stairway with a new wall and door; converting the upstairs kitchen into a sewing room, walk-in closet and bathroom; stripping the downstairs kitchen down to the studs, putting in new drywall, subfloor, counters and cabinets. Originally, we intended to replace the floor in the portion of the dining area that had been refloored, but Charlie pointed out that the original hardwood floor was still in place beneath the old linoleum, so the plan was changed to simply strip the overlaid floor off. He went through the house with us and we developed the strategy of remodelling together. To date, about 90% of this work has been completed. Only tiling of the bathroom and building the closet remain and those are slated for completion within a week.
