"Thank you"
We thought all went well. His workers were very pleasant. However Mike was suppose to come back with another plant for the front bed and also replace one plant that died. I kept calling him and he never came back. Also he new we had 5 feral cats living in our back yard and he planted many Catmint plants, which the cats love and have destroyed. I am very disappointed with him and will never have him again.
"The job was done and everything was great one perennial was dead after the winter and we replaced it in spring"
"This was a big deal met with and did walk around we do not do drawings"
"The big deal is to meet a give ideas for yard or garden which I did for about an hour we never did any work for them"
We purchased ?The Big List Deal? with Arata Landscaping for $49. We met with Mike Arata on August 5th. Mike is quite knowledgeable about curb appeal, local flora, and creating a look that fits with the architecture & grounds. He listened to our goals, proposed some design options to improve several areas, answered many questions regarding plantings dos & don?ts, what / where each type would work and was more than willing to offer some DIY advice, too. Three individual estimates were provided right away; 1 to update the front yard, 1 to add a bed & plants along fence/property line and 1 to re-lay the NICOLOC paver patio in the back. On August 13th we decided to proceed with the front yard update project. We met on September 9th at the nursery to pick out plants, shrubs, trees, etc. On September 16th, on-site work began.
This was my first time having landscaping done so maybe I?m setting the bar a bit high or have a skewed view. My wife and I bought our first home in the Fall so when Spring rolled around we had a half dozen landscape companies come to submit their ideas for design & installation to refresh the old landscape. When Mike came he immediately had ideas and gave reasons for them, showing his professionalism and relevance. I also shared some of the other landscapers ideas and he explained why they weren?t good ones. During the first consultation we discussed many things he could do and he provided an estimate. The estimate was about 30-40% more than the others, and with less plantings but it felt like a good fit. Once he came back on other visits he then mentioned that many of the things we discussed were ?outside of the scope? and ?would cost more.?
Mike met us at the nursery a couple times and was very patient in helping us to select different options for our new plantings. Prior to installation we reviewed the contract and work to be done and things that I thought were included within the estimate were now once again ?extras? that I couldn?t leave out. At this point in the Spring companies were becoming backlogged so I felt like I couldn?t step back to get another set of eyes on it because he would be pushing my project out.
As for the work-Mike and his team arrived at our hope within the planned timeline, which took 4 days to complete. All debris was disposed of in the woods, including some non-biodegradable things that I had to dig out and dispose of-like plastic, etc. They planted new seed/straw in all areas that were dug up and instructed me that it had to be watered a couple times a day for 2 weeks. They left the place looking clean & tidy.
Mike mentioned that he would stop back within a couple weeks to see how everything was and I never heard from him. After watering the grass 2x a day for over three weeks and my grass still not looking so hot I decided to reach out about a visit for possibly spreading new seed. He expressed that I should wait 4 weeks for it to come in and at that point it was about a month and a half. He mentioned he?d stop by and I still haven?t seen him.
Other notes-the amount of mulch used seemed to be pretty minimal so weeds started growing through right away. Due to a lack of experience with landscapers I had little knowledge about bed edging. Looking back-I would?ve asked to have the edging cut deeper so the beds look more defined from the grass, I?ll have to re-edge this deeper next year.
Mike and his team seem to do well but I?m not so sure it was worth the premium price that I tagged him for.
