I didn't pay the balance right away. I called the next day to ask him to come back to fix the mulched area. At that point I had no way to know what the new lawn would turn out to be. They made some mulch changes and I gave him his check for the balance. It was days later that I realized they had only bowled-out the old lawn. A few feet around the edges were simply covered with a thin layer of topsoil. Then a scraggly lawn appeared along with a lot of crabgrass. The grass blades grew inches apart and very fast. I am sure it was an annual rye or worse. I had watered daily, yet the only good-looking grass to grow was (and is) the edges they did not remove. Then I found the item that made me call him back. He and his guys had dumped the old sod just behind some trees at the edge of my lawn. This area is one I have kept grass-free, but landscaped "naturally". I called Service Magic, the service who had suggested PJH. In a three-way conversation, I was unable to get him to return and fix things. He said "why did you pay me?" and I could only respond that I pay all my bills. How could I know what a poor job of landscaping he had done? In the end, I got a couple of hundred dollars worth of mulch for my $2000. On top of that I have been buying topsoil, mulch and preseeded mulch in an attempt to get a lawn back.
Description of Work: I hired PJH Landscaping last Spring (4/1/12 is approximate) to renew my lawn and replace a section with mulch. After a down-payment he showed-up with a couple of really hard workers, but I had no idea his plan was to finish everything in one day. He was supposed to remove all the lawn in and side of house and bring in topsoil, mulch and reseed. I had received other estimates of 2-3 days. He describes himself as a "designer", but there was no evidence they he knows anything about landscape design. I ended the day with a squared-off area of mulch in front whereas I had described a "kidney-shaped" mulched area. They also mulched areas on the side of my lawn. I had asked for straw-cover atop the grass seeds and I got handfuls of straw thrown at random atop hand-thrown grass seed.
