I called Tom to get an estimate.  We made an appointment for Thursday, October 1, 2015.  He didn't  show up so I called his number 45 min after he was supposed to arrive.  His wife answered the phone and said he had gone to take a relative to the airport  and I wouldn't be able to get a hold of him because he didn't have his phone.  I told her I had my husband come home from work early to meet him and I was quite angry about this.  She apologized again and told me he would call me first thing in the morning.  He didn't.  He finally called late in the day and made another appointment with me for Sunday morning October 4, 2015.  He never showed up and he never called.  I would NEVER hire a contractor who didn't show up for 2 appointments and never bothered to call.  He's obviously very unprofessional.

Contractor never got a building permit and created a deck that was structurally unsound and most likely would have collapsed.

Background:

Job  was completed except for poorly spaced stairs. He immediately agreed to return and fix them but I decided to hire someone else for the repair.

When this second contractor come in he refused to fix the steps because there were NUMEROUS errors in construction. He advised me to do a total rebuild.

A third contractor -Deck Designs- came in and basically said the exact same thing. The owner actually crawled beneath the deck to check its integrity and took photos as he did a thorough evaluation. Among the most serious errors were supports dug to depths of less than 20 inches when code called for at least 40 inches. This would have caused the decking to eventually buckle. Contractor also built with nails, not screws, used the wrong size support hangars in many places, etc, etc.

I hired Deck Designs who charged approx. $8600 to rebuild most- not all- of the deck. (Railings and some of the decking were saved) (This contractor submitted his plan to the town, obtained a building permit, and had the job inspected twice  by the town).
