Deck Specialists Inc
About us
We are a custom decks company servicing the Hartford Connecticut area since 1989. We specialize in Ipe or Ironwood decks and have pioneered using the fantastic wood for a number of years. We also have been working with a solid vinyl lumber or HDPE (mostly for rails and fascia) as well as the new generation of higher quality composites. We have advocated the use of quality screw construction rather then sloppy decks blasted together with nail guns from the beginning. From the design process, through the CAD drawings, permitting, and building, we handle everything professionally and efficiently. We build all our own decks! and do not sub contract our work, we stand behind our product. visit our photo galleryWe design and build approximately 50 custom and high end deck projects per year in our area. We are committed to building the finest deck with the best possible materials and still fir your budget. Although, we do still build some pressure treated custom and replacement decks, as well as a fair share of composite decks, most of our work has been with Ipe (ironwood) and solid vinyl rails. It is no surprise, as anyone that does the research will find out, that nothing out performs Ipe for strength, durability, beauty, and price point. Cost is determined by the job. Additional Service - Simsbury, South Glastonbury, South Windsor ,Tolland, Vernon, West Hartford, Wethersfield, & Windsor. Additional phone - (860) 651-4283.

Deck was constructed as scheduled. Very nice looking construction. Quickly done and we were very happy with the deck's overall appearance, though there was an overly wide gap between some decking boards. Work on the site a little sloppy...lots of junk tossed into our woods and 10 years later I'm still finding deck screws on the ground beneath the deck. Also, the deck was sealed in the rain (against my objection) and a landscaped pressure treated terraced stairway was used as a sawhorse resulting in a saw cut to a step .
Our contract had a slogan that said "Quality Decks Built to Last a Lifetime" and a warranty clause that stated "pressure treated lumber is warranted strictly be the lumber company most of which is backed by a lifetime guarantee". In less than 10 years (not exactly a lifetime) the decking is warped and there are two twelve foot planks I can easily put my foot through. In April this year I began contacting Deck Specialist to help with this as almost every screw I tried to remove was stripped and needed to be chiseled out. Also, I feel they should replace these two boards. They returned none of my calls, but finally responded on May 18 to an e-mail using their website. In the response they wrote "Obviously the deck is out of warranty but when we can help out we do our best. I don't have a job going in your area and I am very short handed, I simply have no one to run out at this time. I can let you know when I get some on freed up but it probably will be several weeks". They also suggested I hire a handyman. That was about 12 weeks ago. I've called and written again, but with no response.
"thanks for compliments. in response to the after warranty repairs, I believe I stated, "your deck is well out of warranty but if we have some work in your area, we will try and replace for you free of charge" this would then constitute a favor. was rebutted with "want it done now" more or less with no regards to how busy or short handed we might be. I then mentioned that if it was a pressing need it might make sense to higher someone local for the repair as it didn't sound like a very expensive job, and I was very backed up and could not free someone up any time soon and further had no work scheduled in the area which would make it feasible. i am sorry i could not facilitate the favor in prompt manor was very busy trying to complete this years decks for people as i promised them with the manpower and means i had to work with. would have been nice to receive some indication that this favor would have been appreciated and not "expected" i am sorry that a board or two failed i hand pick the best ones we possibly can find and the industry has gone thru changes in the formulas uses for preservation. i did mention that my suppler might be able to get you compensation respectfully, ."
Overall, I am very happy with the finished product.
