For 2/3 of the project Gary was very professional and did good job. However, as the project approached the later stages he quickly shifted his focus to his next project. As a result, all finishing aspects of this major house addition were of very poor quality. The sheetrock taping was incompetent and poor in all rooms. For example, taped seams are falling apart throughout the house. The trim work was also poor. The screen porch walls fell apart (all screen panels gave way the first year). The tile work failed, with tiles and grout coming loose and falling off due to poor sub-floor preparation. Doors are crooked. The garage floor has settled down 2-3 inches.
It was an exciting time for our growing family. We trusted Gary with our home and a major financial investment. We have lived with regret ever since. One of my biggest regrets was not knowing better to make sure the final payment was larger so that the there would have been more leverage to force him to follow through on his professional commitment.
As for his work overall, I have only two small complaints. Because they didn't fall into one particular rating category, I gave him only a B in professionalism -- although he really was rather professional overall. First, he didn't do an outstanding job on the caulking. He kind of grumbled when I mentioned that I wanted this done and although the work is complete, the caulk had some small "bubbles" and was thicker in parts than others. I don't think he gave it a 100% because he would rather do work that is more challenging. Additionally, Gary didn't always totally clean up after his work. For instance, he hung a new closet door and I found sawdust all over my shoes the next day. He did vacuum around the door area but now I have to remember to dust off each pair off. If he had brought a drop cloth to put over them, then this mess could have been avoided. Second, is that Gary is always early. I think there was one time that he showed up right at the hour he said; other times he arrived 15-30 minutes early. I wasn't too bothered by this because I would rather see him early than late. It was just a surprise the one time he showed up 1/2 hour early and I had just gotten finished showering.
Just so you know...Gary doesn't advertise but gets jobs based on word of mouth. He's been in the business forever and travels all over the state. He used to build homes from the ground up but with the economy the way it is, he hasn't done that for a while. I highly recommend Gary. I wasn't disappointed and neither will you be if you hire him. Oh, and he is a non-smoker! Rare in this industry and highly appreciated when he comes into a home of all nonsmokers!
