A true mark of craftsmanship is time. It has been a year and a half since Scott and his team completed the remodeled bathroom and it still looks gorgeous. Scott's attention to detail is unrivaled. We had some specific requests around the niche and tub details, but where we lacked ideas Scott was able to fill in with his experience and thoughtful suggestions. He left a clean job site and was very responsive to our questions.

We are planning on renovating our kitchen and dinning area next and cannot wait to work with Scott and his team again! Our experience for our recent renovation was an utmost joy. We’ve owned our house for about 16 years, and over that period of time we’ve added-on an extension as well as remodeled most all of the rooms and areas in our Colonial built in 1958. When it came to the basement, however, we just let it be as it was a combination workout room, pantry and generally a way to get to our patio. It had some original light-wood paneling, carpet and unflattering fluorescent lighting. Outside, we had recently built and planted a whole bunch of raised garden beds, and put up some fencing to protect those beds from the 6 chickens who live in a coop in our backyard. Throughout the winter, we were looking forward to getting a better start this Spring by starting seeds indoors, and so that was the excuse to call up Old World Craftsmen and have them go through their Design-Build program in order to completely re-imagine our basement. In order to prevent me from going back on this impulse, I spent a good 12 hours on a Saturday ripping down all the ugly paneling. We were dreaming of shiplap – which has become quite the popular wall stock thanks to Chip + Joanne and their Fixer Upper show. We also wanted a sliding barn door to our re-built pantry, a heated tile floor and a sink with some character to put next to the potting benches. Add a wall-mount TV for the teenage girls in the house (and of course for Dad when war or history movies are on), and some comfortable sofas and chairs, as well as lots of shelves for plants and books – and there’d truly be a multi-functional basement. The design that we iterated with Scott Simonsen, the owner of Old World, included a primary white, brown tile and stain, as well as a contrasting wrought-iron black throughout for emphasis and texture. The design elements included - Shiplap – everywhere! - Shaker doors to complement – 3 internal doors, 1 double internal door and one exterior door - 4 new windows with grills-between-glass including replacing some rotted sills - Installation of 24 LED ceiling lights – 3000K for a warm, neutral light - Schluter DITRA matting to whole basement including landing for electric heat - Basement levelling and textured ‘redwood’ porcelain tiling throughout - Re-plumbing an antique porcelain Crane sink - Removal of old baseboard that went around entire basement, deploy new baseboard to one wall - Knotty alder barn door in burnt umber stain with wrought iron hardware - Wrap columns and beams in hand-distressed pine wrap with burnt umber stain - Base and ceiling trim that complemented the shiplap design - Custom-designed iron railing for stairs We painted the shiplap and all the trim Benjamin Moore Decorator’s White in eggshell – we learned that in this style of design, it is better not to differentiate between the walls and the windows and trim – it came out nicely. For the stair treads/risers, stair trim and bathroom we used a combination of grays including Benjamin Moore Winter Solstice and Englewood Cliffs in satin. The whole Old World Craftsmen crew were courteous and professional for the whole month they were in our house. The basement was cleaned each evening before they left, and they arrived promptly at 8am each morning to begin work. The worksmanship and attention to detail throughout the project was very apparent. There were some areas of the basement that might be termed a little deficient in the right-angle category, but the crew made subtle accommodations which successfully prevented the imperfections from being noticeable. When vendors shipped the wrong door (3 times!), or a doorknob didn’t fit one of our specially made doors, Old World took it upon themselves to get things right without causing us any additional trouble. The tilers, plumbers, heating technicians, electricians and on-staff carpenters all were scheduled and arrived as planned and promised and all did a fantastic job. Paperwork and invoicing went smoothly and special requests were cheerfully received, acknowledged and executed. I was, for example, having trouble getting consistent staining of the pine breams – so Old World Craftsmen came by and did an expert job that turned out beautifully. Overall – the concept of design-build works out really nicely. The general contractor spends, in our case, a few hours talking about what the client wants and then translates that into the requirements that eventually become the finished product. An experienced contractor will already know all the do’s and dont’s and can competently guide homeowners that might have a real idea, but have no idea how to make it real. Old World Craftsmen really delivered a spectacular end-product and we couldn’t be more pleased.

The team at Old World Craftsmen did an amazing job transforming our kitchen into a warm, welcoming, and beautiful space with all the amenities and functionality we asked for. The quality of the work performed was impeccable, and truly we could not have asked for a better finished product then the one delivered by Scott's team.

We live in Larchmont and had Old World Craftsmen gut and remodel two of our bathrooms. I was incredibly impressed by the quality of work that Old World Craftsmen provided. Not only was the work done impeccably, it was timely (I was 5 months pregnant when they started!). They were incredibly responsive to all of our needs. I was especially impressed by how they treated our home throughout the renovations. They were incredibly respectful and at the end of every day they left it like they'd never been here (which was remarkable given they were going up and down the stairs every day with new materials). This was in stark contrast with some other vendors we've worked with over time which made me appreciate them even more. I will only be using them for our future renovations. They are reliable, trust worthy and provide high quality work - which is very rare in the contracting world. I cannot recommend them enough! I would also like to give a shout out to the architect, Raoul - who does a lot of work with them (he was our architect and it was really helpful that Raoul knows them and has worked with them in the past). In addition, Old World Craftsman recommended Tina from True Identity Concepts to be our designer. It was THE BEST DECISION WE EVER MADE. Tina was incredible. She was our project manager for the project, helped us pick out the right materials, identified the ascetic we may want for both bathrooms and seamlessly worked with Scott to ensure everything was managed smoothly. If you do any renovations - HIRE SCOTT for the contracting and HIRE TINA for your design and project management. It is money well spent. I never had to worry about a thing and everything was done on time and with such high quality.

Last summer I purchased a 1924 Dutch Colonial in need of renovation and refinishing. In particular, the main bathroom was a decrepit, low-end remodel that had to go. After interviewing several general contractors, it was immediately clear Scott was my man. He had a passion for old houses, asked the right questions, took notes, made helpful suggestions and developed a comprehensive plan. I had no doubt he would do the job right, and he did! Scott was very easy to work with, up-front, accessible, respectful, timely and helpful. He listened, studied my sketches, provided input and made sure he understood what I wanted. No problem was too big or too small. Each task was clarified and documented ahead of time, so everything went smoothly. I was part of the team and never felt pressured. When questions or options arose, or when I wanted a change, I was patiently consulted before the job proceeded. Scott’s crew is outstanding. Each and every task was completed with efficiency, above and beyond expectation. Scott knows all the best local tradespeople, suppliers and resources, so there is always peace of mind that every task will be done to perfection, at a fair price. Another great thing about working with Scott is his great attention to detail, and his willingness to make suggestions and exchange ideas. The end results are beautiful and functional, but only because Scott steered me in the right direction with his knowledge and experience. When I compare my original design sketch to the finished project, its clear how much better everything turned out because of his guidance and his background in both design and engineering. And one of the worst features of the house, my small front entrance, ended up being one of the best, after Scott advised me to consider a simple change. I gave Scott an A for every category including costs. His services are not inexpensive, but due to the high quality of the work, I got excellent value out of every dollar invested. Had I attempted to be my own GC, it would certainly have been more costly due to errors, not to mention my additional time and effort. And there is just no way to put a price on the satisfaction of enjoying a sparkling new, flawless bathroom that is even better than I imagined. Scott is understandably a high demand contractor, and he is very particular about the people he hires, so work did not commence immediately. But Scott did some creative workflow-organizing to get all the jobs done as soon as possible. And once a job is started, the same crew works on it every day, all day, until its done. So everything worked out fine. I do recommend calling and scheduling an appointment as soon as you can, in order to secure your place in line. I could not be more pleased with the renovation work done by Old World Craftsmen. The company name says it all. If you have an old house, or a new one, and you want work done with old-school pride and high standards, look no further!

The first time we met Scott, we felt that he was totally dependable and his character was what we wanted in a contractor. As we went through the project, we often asked for his advice and we always found that his advice was correct for us both in style and affordability. One of the unique things that we found about Scott and OWC was his sub-contractors. They all were great representatives of OWC's dedication to both quality and style. We are totally happy with what Scott and OWC brought into our life.

I cannot speak highly enough about Scott Simonsen and his able crew. In fact, this is the 5th job that they have done for us and we keep rehiring his company because of the high level of professionalism, practicality, advice and quality work that he provides. It is hard to rate his work as there is not a mark that is high enough! He somehow takes an old fashioned work ethic and brings it to every element no matter how small. Their skilled craftsmanship and attention to detail of a home renovation is always guided in a collaborative team effort to bring my interior home designs to life. Scott personally oversees the projects, organizes the flow with ease, and fine tunes the smallest of details - which separates them from other firms. There are a lot of people involved in a project. The work was all done as described it would be in a timely fashion. All outcomes were what was anticipated and planned with Scott Simonsen. The rooms are updated, the deck is great with the added lighting, and all appliances and fixtures installed in the new bath just perfect. The tile laid in the bath looks wonderful. Once we agreed on a plan and had the planning permission, we were kept informed of the potential start dates. Obviously weather was a consideration. Once the job started you could see meaningful progress everyday. The team of workers were very friendly and hard-working.The site was kept as clean and tidy as possible and they did their best to minimize disruption. Overall we are very pleased with the result and feel the front steps add real value to the property.

You get what you pay for. Scott and his crew are the epitome of professionalism. After Old World earlier renovated our kitchen, we knew we could trust them to do solid work. Scott understands our design aesthetic and worked with us to design a new patio and deck that worked with our budget. He attended to all the small details that made a big impact on the finished patio. And as with our previous renovations, our neighbors commented on the cleanliness and professionalism of the workers. Every day our property was left clean and our neighbors undisturbed. We plan to use Old World for all our future projects.

Phenomenal experience! Old World Craftstman was contacted along with a list of several contractors to finish an unfinished room into a bathroom. This was the only contractor that made us feel confident regarding the construction and getting through all the other complicated hoops (Architect, applying for permits, etc.). The old saying, you get what you pay rang true and Old World Craftsman was not the cheapest offer, but it has been the best construction experience we have had to date. The owner Scott and his crew are absolutely phenomenal. He is a gentleman and a scholar when it comes to construction. All of his staff from the front office (Dulce), to his foreman (Marcos) and all of his subcontractors worked diligently to make sure the project was done quickly and to our satisfaction. From the initial planning phases until the completion of the project, the team arrived on time, communicated well via phone and email and provided clear expectations as to time frames for starting construction, options, cost, etc. The project started on time and I have yet to see a crew that went beyond the call of duty to prepare the work space to minimize disruptions and to clean every day prior to their departure. They were in our home while we were at work and we had full confidence in their work they completed without disruption anything in our house. The company managed the architect, the permits and the subcontractors very efficiently to ensure that there was minimal delays for the construction. There were no surprises when it came to construction costs. Their estimate was spot on and the only time the cost was increased was when we requested additional items along the way after the construction had started. The bathroom was finished in 4 weeks and we have gotten nothing but compliments as to the work that was completed. I intend in the future to rehire this company because their work was great.

From the start, everything was done with utmost professionalism.  I was put in touch with superb architect and designer who helped me create the spaces I wanted with beautiful fixtures and finishes.  The workman were a pleasure - on time every day, clean , neat and professional.  Scott Simonsen, the owner of Old World, was totally hands-on and accessible at all times.  The project was finished on time and on budget, with a beautiful - perfect, really - result.  
I plan to work with him in the future on other projects, and give him the highest recommendation.
