We just purchased a house, were having central air installed as well as eliminating baseboard heating - which created alot of exposed ductwork - and had a variety of other projects to accomplish. When we saw Mike VanDerheyden's flyer, we were amused by the cleverness of his company's name (Vander-Built) and called him. He invited my husband to go see him at work on his current project. My husband liked the quality of the work and asked Mike to come and give us an estimate on our many projects. His gave us a fair bid and we liked him as a person, so we looked no further. We couldn't be happier. He's terrific. The air conditioning and heating job was very complicated and created a lot of exposed ductwork, compromised some of the existing floor plan, etc. At one point I stopped all work until Mike could come over and tell me if we could make it look ok. He immediately understood the problems and was able to offer creative and satisfactory solutions. He eventually built all the soffits, restructured some walls and doorways, replaced or added much of the crown moulding and baseboards, removed and rearranged windows in the master bedroom (repairing exterior shingles as needed), created a false wall to cover exposed pipes, fixed damaged built-in bookcases, installed a new front door, installed a pocket door in the basement, etc. etc. The kitchen had a large exposed load-bearing beam that essentially made getting new cabinets nearly impossible. Mike knew how to cut down the metal and bury the beam in the ceiling joists so that it was no longer visible. I was ecstatic. His work is excellent and he's got good ideas. And, like a chess player, he's able to see several steps ahead: so he can foresee problems and consequences and adapt accordingly. The work is done and we miss having Mike's cheerful personality around the house! But he'll be back in a few weeks to custom-build a wall to wall entertainment center for us. We look forward to seeing him again!
