After the home show the quotes started coming in, and Dan's original quote came in within a few dollars of the lowest bidder who was selling low end Chinese cabinets, that only came in particular sizes. Having read up on those and the questionable materials they use, plus being one who prefers to spend his money here in the USA it was a simple decision to go with Virkler.
We went to Dan's shop where we further refined the quote with him and chose a few more nuanced options, such as they type of doors, finishes etc... This changed the price a little but it wasn't too terrible, then we got back a more refined quote from Dan. We returned one more time this time to review all the placements measurements etc.... where a few more tweaks had to be made and we then wrote him a check. 3 weeks later the cabinets showed up in boxes all ready for me to assemble.
I should mention here that I didn't realize how much time most places need to turn around a made to order kitchen, many were in the 1-3month time frame, we had gotten a later start than we realized and since I was planning to do most of the install over my winter vacation with my father the quick turnaround meant a lot here.
It wasn't until the middle of the job that I fully realized the benefit of Dan's hybrid business model where he acts both as a vendor for a larger manufacturer, as well as maintains a custom shop too. The week we were to assemble and install the kitchen it turned out a simple mistake was made in the ordering and a cabinet that should have had a finished side did not. I was quite fearful that this error would require waiting for the factory to make a new part and ship it and would prevent me from finishing the kitchen in time, and also push out the counter-top install. I called Dan and the next day he had a new panel made (at no cost to us) which we arranged to meet him and pick up we glued it on and today it is as good as any other cabinet in the kitchen. It was at that moment that I realized the full value of dealing with Virkler cabinets.
Virkler was able to pass along the savings that come with the economy of scale of dealing with an ultra modern automated facility that likely buys their materials by the train car, all the time backing it up with the support of a local craftsman in the small shop. I was quite happy with how everything went.
