electric heaters as well as a fireplace, I didn't want to take a chance
on pipes freezing by delaying the after-hours-rate repair until normal
business hours with the freezing temperatures and all. I was reluctant
to call my oil company, as they had been out several times in the past
few weeks for various items (clogged nozzle, new water feeder valve,
zone valve replace, power head replace etc) The clogged oil nozzle
replacement was a mere 34 days prior, and this seemed to be a recurrence. Typical
service call by my oil vendor would have been to merely replace a $9 nozzle and $10 filter, and fire the system,
without taking the time to determine the root cause.
I saw Instant Response's full page ad in a hard copy Yellow Pages (!) and made the
call at 7am. The business owner assured he'd have technician out that
morning, and Dave arrived around 11am. I provided some brief history on
the 23 yr old unit and the recent repairs, and the system ended up
needing a complete overhaul....the annual 45 minute "service" by my
usual oil vendor was the Walmart of furnace maintenance, comparatively speaking.
Dave was on site over 6 hours, walked me through every step of
the process, gave me a few options here and there. The igniter unit and
burner were disassembled and cleaned, the nozzle and oil filter were
replaced and the entire system cleaned and lubricated. The temp/pressure
gauge was replaced as mine was off calibration by 7psi. The expansion
tank was waterlogged, needed replacement, a vital relief valve in the
rear of the system was corroded closed, needed replacement, along with a
drainage valve faucet. The air outlet baffle needed a missing weight
and was adjusted as well.
The system is now as good as new, flame fires instantly, roars less, as the fuel/air mixture was
improperly calibrated by my usual technician. The radiators no longer gurgle with the inefficiency of trapped air bubbles, and the hot water in the shower is instant, lasts much longer.
The base hourly rate is probably the same as my oil company charges, but the diligence and persistence in sleuthing out various systemic problems and inefficiencies is something I had been missing. I will probably use Instant Response for all my maintenance needs going forward.
