First of all, they were very vague as to how big a generator they would recommend that we buy ("be careful you don't buy too small a one, you could have problems if a power failure occurs at a moment when there is a big load")--and then having agreed to buy a 35kw unit, offered us a "deal" at the last minute on a 48kw which i have subsequently learned is unnecessary, even for a very large home.
Second, the unit was installed without a surge protector between it and the power line--and a result, in the first major storm, there were a surge of power in the power line (apparently a wire 2000 feet down the street from our unit) was struck by lightening. The circuitbreakers protecting the house duly tripped, but the generator electronic were fried.
I subsequently learned from the Darien CT town hall that although they 'recommend' that units be protected by surge protectors, it is not law, and some companies install them automatically and some do not. You would have thought for a $45,000 project they would have found a few $ for a surge protector at time of installation.
Finally, the company's service is terrible: to be precise, the guys that work for them are very nice and well qualified. But the management of the firm is extremely greedy and only interested in new sales. After our generator was damaged it took them--despite multiple requests--weeks to order the new parts and then weeks to install them. And they do nothing before they have your credit card number.;
I also complained to the company's president in writing and he did not even deign to reply to my email.
"Being a responsible generator company, part of our offer includes a complete assessment for a generator that will be adequate for the customer’s needs and free of charge. This assessment includes room to grow if requested. We also provide the option to get a bigger unit if the prices are more competitive and end up being beneficial for the customer but the decision is entirely made by the customer, we just provide options. Surge protection is just another option provided at the time of install and the customer decides whether or not to include it. Surge protectors do have limitations and will not always protect all devices. We do our best to provide our knowledge to accommodate our customers in every possible way but we can’t anticipate where a lightning is going to strike."
They worked with me to resolve it but it was tough.
Do not expect a bargain or even a resonalbe price.
