Provider was hired to paint the popcorn ceilings in my living room, dining room, kitchen and main hallway. There were also two areas that required some repair. I had previously attempted painting the ceiling in a small room, and had a problem with some of the popcorn coming off. At the time, I purchased a can of popcorn ceiling patch from Home Depot, and attempted to repair the damage. It didn't come out perfect, but isn't too bad. When Jose came out to estimate the job, I explained the problem I had, and showed him my repair. He told me I had the problem with the popcorn coming off because I didn't know what I was doing, and assured me that he would be able to paint the ceilings with no problems. The first key, he told me, was to first paint the entire ceiling with a coat of oil based primer, then apply the latex ceiling paint. This was consistent with what other painters had told me. He chuckled when I showed him my repair, and told me that I would not be able to find the spots that he repaired. When Jose came out to start the work, he told me that the oil based primer was "too expensive", and not necessary. So he started to apply the latex ceiling paint. He got about 20% or the way through the ceiling before the first small spot of popcorn peeled off. As he progressed, more and more of the popcorn started to peel off of the ceiling. Jose kept telling me it wasn't a problem. He'd repair the spots. After he completed the first coat, he mixed some popcorn into a bucket of paint, and began dabbing the mixture onto the damaged areas. It looked terrible, but he told me he'd apply more after it dried. He kept going back to the damaged areas, over and over again. At the same time, his helper continued painting the ceilings. Upon reflection, it was a complete disaster from the start. After three days' work, Jose told me that the job was complete. It looked horrible. The popcorn repair I had done looked about 100 times better than any of his repairs. The wound up being thick applications of some kind of goop, and did not remotely resemble the popcorn finish he was attempting to match. Some of them were starting to crack and peel off before he even left my house. Jose suggested that I could find a "popcorn guy" to spray the patches, and it would be very inexpensive. I offered to pay him 50%, and settle up with him after I had the ceiling properly repaired. He became quite angry, and offered to deduct $200 from the original $1,100 estimate. I made a quick decision that it would be best to pay him off and get him out of my house as quickly as possible, so I begrudgingly gave him a "gift" of $900 and sent him on his way. After he left, I realized that there were white paint droplets all over him dark hardwood floors, which had been refinished about a year earlier. I am still carefully scraping white paint off of my floors. I subsequently contacted some ceiling specialists, and hired one for $1,300 to completely refinish the ceiling with a new fine popcorn spray. They completely wrapped the rooms in plastic, and didn't get a drop of paint anywhere it didn't belong, and the job came out fantastic. Wish I had called them in the first place! At any rate, my experience with Jose's Painting LLC was a complete abomination. I STRONGLY recommend you stay far away from them!
