After converting our home to natural gas heat last year, we decided to leverage the natural gas line and install a whole house standby generator. I previously used a 7.5 kW portable gasoline generator wired into the house through a transfer switch. I contacted several contractors, all of which supplied Generac equipment. I decided to go with Generac because of its reputation for reliability, and that other people I knew used Generac also. I met with each contractor to review the site, their proposal for generator size, and other considerations. Ray Dufresne of Advanced Gas Co. Inc. spent the most time evaluating the site and answering my questions about generators. Advanced Gas is primarily a company with gas stations in the area. After significant power outages at these stations in prior years, they decided to outfit their stations with backup generators, and they became a dealer for Generac in the process. Now they are one of the most experienced end users as well as one of the most knowledgeable contractors in the area, and Ray?s experience and expertise was evident during his visit to my home. Ray submitted his proposal promptly. During the days to follow, Ray quickly responded to other questions that arose. Other contractors who were bidding were not as responsive. Ray recommended the 20kW generator, and most other contractors did the same. Ray?s was not the lowest bid, but I was most influenced by his knowledge of the generator. One question I found important was how much each company charges for the annual maintenance. Although anyone can maintain the generator, I planned to use the company that installed the original. Prices for annual maintenance ranged widely among the contractors, some more than $500. Ray?s annual maintenance price was in the group of the low priced contractors. The decision to go with Advanced Gas Co. was easy to make. Ray arrived with the generator on the day we agreed, doing the site excavation and generator placement with another helper. His electrical subcontractor arrived the following day, adding the new transfer switch and connection to the generator. The plumbing subcontractor arrived the following day to pipe from the existing gas line to the generator. Following a town required pressure test, the plumbing contractor returned to finish the connection to the generator. Both subcontractors have been used by Advanced Gas for a long time, and they performed admirably. Finally, after a successful final operation test for the town, Ray turned the generator over to me. Entire process?four days. Ray went over the entire operation with me, and left me with the manuals for further study. I have since asked him questions, and he has continued to be responsive. I am very pleased with the operation of the Generac. I also purchased the Mobile Link, which Ray installed on the generator. This Mobile Link provides email notification of the generator operation or problems over a cellular network. It works fine. I strongly recommend Advanced Gas Co. for installation of a generator. The whole job went flawlessly, was completed on the expected schedule and budget, with no surprises.
