Home Building
$350,000
I wanted a shell built by Bensonwood- extremely energy-effecient, built off-site in New Hampshire. He was the only contractor they would recommend. Despite my better sense, I signed his contract. Within a month he was off schedule. He had great trouble with drainage problems on my sloping lot but wouldn't enlist a subcontractor who was able to solve the problem, but charged me a lot of extra money for having to re-do drainage that then still didn't work. (I found out later he had other local bad debts and no one reputable wanted to work with him.) I asked Bensonwood several times if I could get another contractor, they said, 'hang in there'. With the concrete basement and house shell/windows/outer doors up, it still took him 9 months to get close to finishing. He'd have the painters in to paint a couple of walls but they'd have to stop because the rest wasn't ready for them. I heard complaints from 4 of the 5 subcontractors about him during the process of having to do partial work multiple times. He quoted a 20% overhead but got up to 40% overhead on some projects I later checked with subcontractors about. Finally I refused to give him more money until I had a CO. At that point he emailed me that he was 'broke', and disappeared, still owing the subcontractors about $30,000.
After bankruptcy, all he has to do is give his company another name.  Meanwhile, I'm still picking up his pieces.
