It's 12 degrees in Connecticut today and the entire drain/electric pump is frozen solid thereby rendering the furnace inoperable. The solution from a highly rated Angie's List HVAC contractor is to wait until the thing thaws so that he can rip out this mess and diagnose if any damage was done to the furnace from water freezing in the heat exchanger.
Please don't fall for the "maintenance contract" as I did. Of no benefit whatsoever.
"Dear [member name removed], I am so sorry we did not live up to our high service standards we strive for and i understand your frustration. As the owner of Aire Serv of Southwest Ct. i wish you had called me about how you were feeling. You had used us 6 or 7 times the previous 1.5 years to keep your older system running. We did change your indoor evaporator coil and had done some repairs to your 1989 Trane furnace and I appreciate the business you gave us. Your furnace is an attic mounted condensing gas furnace and will freeze if the temperatures drop way below freezing. The manufacturer says that model furnace is to be installed in conditioned space not in an attic which is part of the problem. Your furnace produces the condensate water which must be drained constantly and will freeze below 32 degrees. We did not install the furnace or drain lines for your system we did install the pump since we could not get the water to gravity drain at all during the summer. We did these repairs in June of 2013 and I have to assume it worked well until we had the very cold weather. I strive for great quality and satisified customers and regret you had this experience with aire Serv. I wish we had been given the opportunity to correct the issue as we always warranty our work for 1 year part and labor. Brian Powell (Owner) Aire Serv of Southwest Ct 203-736-8952"
