"It was unfortunate that I wasn't able to work with the member because of the City of Denver's biased licensing policy. I am licensed in Park County (with Jefferson and Chaffee Counties where I have done most of my building having no licensing requirements) and assumed Denver would use the testing from Park County to issue a building license. Denver does not take any other county or municipalities licensing. Also, Denver requires that you have work experience as an employee or subcontractor of another firm of at least two years in "all phases of residential construction" (for a Class C residential license). I applied with 2 years + experience in working for clients, but the licensing dept rejected my application as they feel building an addition or a $300,00+ remodel is not enough to satisfy their "all phases of construction" requirements. I also submitted affidavits for two custom homes I designed and built in the early 90's, but this was also not deemed sufficient as they were not "current" builds. Of course I could not submit to my experience of the other 35 single and multi-family homes I designed and built as they were speculation homes and can not be used as qualifications. I gave up. Denver is not interested in granting licenses to builders who have completed speculation projects. I then entered into a partnership with another builder who was licensed in Denver, but the member's lender was not able to make that work. I apologized to him and he was able to move on."
