After discussing details, I got a good idea of what materials they would be using on the projects. I felt the project went smoothly and was within the timeline & cost I expected.
Description of Work
Nathan and crew did a minor remodel of 2 bathrooms. New tile, plumbing, vanities, patch work on walls. The crew was prompt and communication was good.

So far, we have been extremely pleased with the entire experience. Gary at Compass Construction is extremely committed to sticking to the schedule to make sure that the project is completed on time. In fact, he is so committed that at one point, they were three weeks ahead of schedule, which meant that when there was a permitting delay due to the a backlog with the city permitting office, it didn't derail the entire schedule. Nathan has been a pleasure to work with - extremely responsive and easy to work with. He is always available to discuss design ideas or talk through the schedule and plans. Both Gary and Nathan are extremely talented - they're pretty much fountains of knowledge and ideas, which is what I'm looking for in a contractor since I personally don't have that eye for design. As my husband and I would walk through the space with them during construction, they'd just rattle off all these cool ideas for adding a bookshelf, integrating our old fireplace, coming up with a creative space for storing our stereo, etc. Any issues we have had have been promptly addressed. For example, one night the furnace wouldn't go on - it had been moved because they had removed the floor beneath it, which caused a minor issue. Someone was out here to get it back on within a half an hour. All of the subcontractors have been excellent. And also really nice - which is a bonus considering we continued to live in the house during construction. Also on that topic, the workers have all been very respectful of our space. One other thing worth mentioning: these guys run a very tight ship in terms of keeping the workspace CLEAN. One of my friends who is an interior designer couldn't believe how clean the basement was even in the middle of the construction. Overall, these guys are easy and fun to work with and they do very high-quality work!
Description of Work
We hired Compass Construction to do a complete remodel of our basement, including completely re-doing the plumbing and electrical, re-doing all of the duct work, dropping the basement floor to increase the ceiling height, and changing the configuration of the rooms. Because we have an older home - built in the 1940s - we had some really messy stuff down there - old ducts that didn't go anywhere, funky plumbing, really old, inefficient heating ducts. Compass managed the project from start to finish - starting with removing all of the old plaster walls, jackhammering out the old foundation, pouring a new foundation, re-doing the HVAC systems, cleaning up all the plumbing, re-doing the electrical, including installing a new panel, putting up drywall and doing all of the finishing work.

Nathan was really nice and knowledgeable, but his subcontractors did sub-par work for us. The hardwoods were never really done right. They werent done right the first time and Nathan did have his guy redo them in an attempt to rectify the situation, but they just were never done correctly. The guy cut corners--not sealing under the baseboards, for example. And the electrical guys he sent out really cut corners and did not want to put in any effort to help us figure out some issues in our older home. They told us several things were impossible that I have since had done with another electrician. My theory is that our jobs were too small to garner much attention.

However, after delaying the roofing contractor so that Compass Construction could do my back porch project, per Nathan, in August, I received very little contact from Compass Construction after late June. My requests for a date to schedule the contract signing so that the back porch project could be completed by his company (and the new roof installed,) were met with excuses. I was told by Nathan that he would be out of town, that he had lost a couple of people, his time was slim, he was interested. I waited and I waited. It was only after sending him an email this week stating that I needed to know if his company could do this project in August or not, and that I could not wait any longer. That Nathan replied promptly, stating that they were 'very busy and that he couldn't get to my project until October.......so probably not'.Excuse me? I feel that Nathan; as the owner of Compass Contruction, could have and should have told me that his company could not do this project in the August time frame that he had originally stated, and certainly before now! I am very disappointed that he delayed telling me. Costing me valuable time that I could have been finding and working with another contractor and having this project completed on time. I like Nathan, and his company is probably very skilled at doing quality work. I do not like however that I was not respected, even though it was a small project, and told in a much more timely manner.
Description of Work
Nathan was professional, kind and responsive initially. We emailed back and forth for the first few weeks of June as I became aware of the scope of the project and the out of pocket costs. Basically what I could afford.

The entire project was managed poorly by Compass and they used many subpar workers. Overall, it was a bad experience and I wouldn't recommend using this company.
Description of Work
We hired Compass to do a variety of remodeling jobs: add main floor closet install new front door install hardwood floors combine two living rooms into one (remove wall) add 2nd (smaller) master closet install bathroom floor tile add tiled shower Basement remove in-ground pool new paint, interior and exterior new carpet upstairs correct structural damage We had a project manager assigned to us, Josh, and we felt very calm and confident after the initial meetings with the owner and the project manager. Over the course of the next 2 months we discovered that, although the PM was promising that many things were being done, they actually were either not being done or being done poorly. We brought these items up with the PM and after not getting satisfactory results we brought them to the owner. In general, they hired poorly trained workers and we has serious quality issues with the painter and the carpenter. The painter did not do any preparation work on the interior and proceeded to paint over holes, nails, dirt, construction dust, a dead moth, etc. This caused the majority of the paint job to not adhere very well and we are still finding places where the paint comes off of the walls. He could not paint a patched hole to save his life. You can see where every 'fix' was painted. The carpenter built several slightly crooked walls. One of the big points that the we had with the project was the fact that our new front porch did not get caissons to support the roof. This was in the plans and we pointed out several times that we did not find caissons when we probed with some rebar. We were assured again and again by the PM and the owner that the caissons were there. Only when I dug out the dirt under the slab to prove the absence of caissons did they finally concede that they weren't there. The city had already received a signed engineer's letter stating that caissons were present (when they weren't) and that everything was up to code. So they essentially lied to the city code engineer. At that point they proceeded to retrofit the caissons and the city approved the work. The company fired Josh and there carpenter as a result of the shoddy work on the porch and other items. Over the next several months we went through several revisions of a punch list. Compass was very good about sending workers out to make repairs. The problem was that their workers didn't do a good job of repairing most things. It came to the point where we were exhausted from managing this project ourselves and it was obvious that Compass' workers just couldn't deliver the quality work that we expected and were promised. We ended up settling for a small credit in lieu of Compass finishing several repairs.

He was great but he was too expensive. The quote was probably the best one we got; it was very detailed and it had great information about how they would get things done on the timeline. He included everything we talked about and he also included some other features that we were thinking about so we could get an idea for how much it would cost. He put a description under each area and explained what everything would entail. He also did a timeline and showed us what things were going to be accomplished. They added a 10% fee on everything which was about $4,000 more and that just didn?t really add up for us. He?s a nice guy and he has good communication skills so I think he would have been good to work with.
Description of Work
Compass Construction gave us a quote to enclose our master bedroom, redo the bathroom, put some stucco on the outside of the house, put in an entertainment center, and put in a banister.

Nathan is a fair, honest, responsible guy. I've worked with him on several smaller projects around my home and he listens and does a really good job. He will bring in the right tools and guys to get whatever job done. He is able to help with small handyman things and much larger construction needs. I feel like this is someone I want working on my home and I'd recommend him highly to my friends.
