During the project, Todd Butler, the owner, and his crew were
courteous and polite. Todd did cut some corners during the installation
that I noticed: He promised to use ice and water shield in the valleys
but when I came home one day from work I noticed that he cut the roll in half
and only used half the width for each valley. During install I also
noticed that he did not use step flashing technique, nor did he apply
sealant in a stepped fashion when applying shingles next to walls or a structures
such as a chimney or swamp cooler jacks. Other than this, it appeared to
look ok. They did a good job cleaning up except for debris
that fell into the attic from the tear-off. This was in September of
2012.
In exactly a year we had water running into our kitchen. Water was
coming through nail holes that were not properly sealed on the swamp cooler
jack. Todd came over and sealed the leaking swamp cooler jack with some
sealant that he toweled on. This was only a temporary fix and he promised
he would come and fix it properly in the spring.
During that winter a second leak occurred over our front porch. That
section is a flat roof and was re-roofed with TPO. He stated that he came
over and water tested the area and could not find the leak.
After this second leak I had a home inspector and a few different qualified
roofers inspect the roof and it was unanimously concluded the installation was
done with improper techniques and shoddy workmanship. I have tried to
meet with Todd but he usually does not call me back and one time when he
promised to meet up with me he didn't show up.
To sum this up without going into excruciating detail; there are
many parts of my roof that are unacceptable:
water is leaking behind my gutters and possibly other places due to
improperly installed drip-edge. He never
came back to reset my swamp cooler. Many
sections of the TPO roofs are peeling up, especially around my wood-stove
flu. He reused most of the original
flashing that was on the roof instead of fabricating new pieces and spending
the time to do things right. There are
now many holes and openings where rain and weather can enter the structure of
he house due to his shoddy flashing. There
are other issues, but I am sure I have said enough here.
