Phil was very responsive, inspected the site, analyzed the situation and gave me several options. The old brick columns were not even touching the beam over the slab and had been placed there as decoration more than load bearing which would be the thing to do if large snowfall got on a short section of the roof. I had the concrete folks dig 3' plus piers with rebar installed so that new metal adjustable poles could be added on top of the porch slab to support the beam and would have more than an 8" slab under them to support it. Then with the beam properly supported, two new brick columns could be added as decoration to hide the multi-ton metal poles that support the short roof section.
Henderson Engineering did a great job and Phil was very helpful. I'd definitely use them again if I need structural engineering work done.
